Icon A5 Prices Rise

Yeah......that is probably why I always wait a little while until I buy something new to the market.

Insurance for the company go up after the crash? Or just more fingers in the rip-off pie than they expected? :)

It will be a long time ,before I could even think of buying a used one. They had a few at aopa Tampa and where giving rides, they weren’t that busy.

Crooks! They should at least sell the planes at the agreed price to people with deposits. Then they can raise the price later. I may call the company and tell them what I think. I hope every single person asks for their deposit back.
I wonder how many folks actually have a deposit on these airplanes?

Cessna Skycatcher all over again?

A lot of folks are certainly going to bail.

Then again, we live in a country where for many, $400k or so is a rounding error in their net worth. Adding an ICON A5 to 10 million dollar yacht, or putting one in the hangar alongside their Citation or Gulfstream, for instance, would be an easy reach.

Are there 100 such folks around? If marketed properly, I would not want to bet against it.

Another factor to consider is the risk to the company once your product starts killing billionaires.

About one out of ten SeaReys crash each year, and ~20% of the crashes are fatal. And Sea Reys aren't marketed to the casual buyer. Kill off the scion of a $5B empire, and the lawyers are probably going to take pains to note that the Icon was sold as a *safe* outlet for their late client's impulses. And those lawyers will probably laugh at the Icon's claims that the sales agreement protects them.

I think that may have been due to the bad weather. I was sent an invitation for a free ride, but after I sent them my info they said they were full up. I suspect the real issue was my gross weight being over 200 lbs but they were polite enough not to say it.

How much would a new carbon cub on floats be?

Pulling my deposit and going to buy 3 Raptors on floats instead! :D

If you want a water toy ,you can always buy an inflatable, with a flying wing.

A Carbon Cub on floats is cheaper than Icon A5. They push about $250k new without floats, so let's say $300k, or about 75% of the price of A5. But then wings do not fold, which makes it impossible to moor it at a standard slip. Most importantly, Carbon Cub isn't going to make LSA with a decent engine. So yeah, it's cheaper, but does not fit every billionaire's mission. It certainly is not a plane to keep in your yaht's heli hangar.

I suppose that means unsold A5's might be headed for the crusher, just like the C162.

True - a carbon cub would make a poor yacht tender, but for an average joe like me who might want a lsa with seaplane option, it seems to be a better choice. I hope they succeed, but i dont think i would be happy now if i had put a deposit down on this thing based on a mich lower advertised price. I would be trying to get my dollars back!

Do you understand that a Carbon Cub LSA on floats costs almost the same as A5 and is just as underpowered? An average joe would be much more interested in something that costs 1/4 of those. Like, a normal Cub, slightly used. Or, even a SeaRey.

I would likely never buy a new plane. A new plane will never beat the entire used market in bang-for-buck. So its not a practical problem from the beginning.

However The carbon cub engine is rated at 180 hp for takeoff. The icon is 100. And i can probably land the cub all kinds of places.

Why someone would pay this insane amount for an LSA is beyond me. I'll keep my Comanche 250, buy a super nice Lake LA4-200 and fly on the remaining $250K+ for life.

How lovely for you to show off your privilege. You are lucky that you had your medical once and can do fly that Lake with BasicMed now. Not everyone can.

What does that have to do with the topic at hand?

Now now. I wouldn’t blame the person for FAA’s goofy-assed medical rules and even stupider Congresscritters caving to the “must have had one medical” BS, all covering their own asses in case someone crashes into a school bus full of personal injury attorneys after having a splitting headache from thinking about it all.

I agree that the fact that some are excluded sucks big time, but it's not his fault.

Yeah but a 95kt flying jet ski is a steal at only $389,000.

Meh, let's not go there, depending on location you could get a lot more utility out of a A5 than a cirrus, I know a amphib is much faster despite a slower TAS where I live than a straight lil wheel land plane.

Well a new jet ski would have utility I suppose as well but most would prefer the utility of a used boat instead.

If I'm living that remote that I require the utility of a sea plane vs land plane, I'll take speed, cargo, range and IFR capability for the same price or much less.

For sure a U206 with a 550 is a better buy, not sure about the whole new turbo thing though, but as for the concept, something that is like a fast amphib 152 and can burn mogas, but isn't built like a open cockpit semi ultralight, that's got appeal, ofcourse the price and how they have been doing things on the business side of the house sucks, but the A5 design is quite nice minus the wannabe car instrument panel.

Actually it was a joke to show how stupid expensive the A5 is. Personally I don't care about your medical situation. Such a weird response......
