Colonoscopy prep

I go to my regular flight Doc tomorrow. He said he would do the required 'recommendation' for the colonoscopy, hopefully that will be enough.
And, since everything will "probably" be OK, you won't need to do it again for another 10 years.

Not my favorite subject on a pilot board. I may need a few PBRs afterwards to get the mind back to normal.

I looked into the 'poop sample option', which sounds very appealing, but the reviews were mixed. It seemed to push you towards a real colonoscopy with the slightest indicator anyway. With that in mind, and the $600 cost, I may as well prep for the real thing.

Prepping for Man to go, where man has gone before.
I couldn't help my self, I'm going to be there next year.
my third.

I'm surprised that in three pages on this subject no one has mentioned the Jeff Foxworthy u tube video...

Was supposed to have one tomorrow and I’ve been trying to get an estimate of the total cost for nearly two weeks. They couldn’t give an estimate. Too many independent contractors involved charging whatever the hell they feel like.

I cancelled this morning. KMA.

Whatever the cost, it beats dying from a preventable cancer.

This whole discussion sounds pretty ****ty! Like an episode of America's Dirtiest Jobs!

:D

Indeed. And it’s not about the cost, it’s about dealing with thieves and I refuse to do so.

I was a little ahead of schedule on this one anyway so now I’ll wait until next year when I'm moved back down to Springfield. Cox Healthcare provides detailed upfront estimates and does so for both clean & dirty results...including path...including everything. Great people down there.

Good to hear. Thankfully, I'm about 5 years out for one and not looking forward to it. Last one had really nasty effects on me. One good thing is it is a way to loose 5 or 10 pounds. Wouldn't say its a good one, though.

I know that every policy is different, but every policy I ever had covered colonoscopies for little out of pocket expense. It saves them tons in the long run. My last one was $20, all in.

Yes, well to be fair that's 5-10 lbs of poop that you lose. I lost nearly 12, but some of us are fuller of it than others.

The preparation was the worst part. There is a reason they also give you anti-nausea medicine. Nasty, there has to be a better way.

We always knew you were full of ****!...

Mine covers it as preventative if there are no polyps. If there are polyps then it becomes diagnostic and it's not covered. I started at 40, have had about 5 now and have only been clean once. And besides, it doesn't matter if I'm paying for it or the insurance is. The end result is I'M STILL PAYING FOR IT one way or another and I'm going to shop wisely. I don't want them to screw my insurance company any more than I want them to screw me.

LUCKY YOU!

Unfortunately, my family history (I'm the youngest of 10) and my own dictate that I have one done every 3 to 5 years, depending on my physician at the time. Every one of us has had polyps. As I always say, we're all azzholes...but non of us is a perfect azzhole!

As an aside, since I already had the prep mixed and thought to myself "hmmm, it probably wouldn't hurt to still flush myself out."

This was my first time for Miralax to be the flushing drug of choice. Mixed a 14 day supply with 64oz of Gatorade, started at 4pm, drank it all by 5:30. I was cleaned out by 10pm. I was up about every other hour all night but it was clear.

I guess I"m lucky because I can't understand what everyone ******* about...it's always been a non-event for me. Oh, and BTW, I couldn't taste the Miralax at all, it just tasted like orange Gatorade. And I didn't bother with the anti-nausea pills, not much makes me nauseous.

It is quite possible that there is a tumor suppressor mutation in your family. Good for keeping the inspections going. If everyone has polyps there is a good bet you could susceptible to the cancer.

Good, maybe they will have it through in 10 years when I have to do this again.

Dunno abou there, but both the Gastros I've used (one in Northern Virginia and one in Charlotte) were able to quote a single definite price. They do this in their standalone outpatient facility so there's no separate bill for the doc, the facility, the gas passer (or I guess needle pusher)....

Now on the other hand I had a FNA biopsy at the local hospital and I got hit up nine ways to sunday.

Just preparing for man to go where they have never gone before

While I did loose some weight due the the extraversion of so much fecal material than I think my GI tract went back in time to get some more, I lost even more from not being able to eat much of anything for a week after the procedure. I'm told that my reaction is quite unusual though.

I think the anal retentives amongst us have issues with the prep, but other than that, it's no big deal, just an extended stay on the pot. There are different preps, my doc prescribed the cheaper concoction that tastes pretty bad, I guess due to insurance. Here is the kicker, my insurance didn't pay for the prep anyway and the better tasting stuff was about $10 more. Note made for next round, in 7 years.

When they are scoping the upper GI (stomach) the same time as the lower GI (colon), I always insist they do the stomach first.

I go in Monday for my first one. Prep starts in the morning with clear liquids, then some Dulcolax tablets at4p, then half bottle of Miralax and 32oz Gatorade at 6p, couple GasX at 9p, then the next batch of Mira/Gator 8hrs before the procedure.

I don't really give a crap about the prep (never done it tho). It's the sedation and its after effects that I don't want. And I worry about complications (tear). I've got too much going on at home and work to be down for a day or two. Oh well.

My son is a Gatorade aficionado, no bottle left undrunk...I made the mixture this morning and I had to peel the labels off and mark them to not drink...he might grab one thinking I'm messing with him tho.

No law requires the sedation. I did my last one without it and was so happy to be able to drive myself home and go right to work. No more amnesia and a lost day. A couple moments of discomfort but no big deal. I found watching the monitor quite interesting. My next one will be done the same way.

I'm going to ask when I arrive in the morning. I should have called and asked about it earlier. I had 3 tooth fillings replaced last year and tried without numbing for the first time and it was great (hate needles in my gum and the numbness afterward).

Play-by-play: 4 Dulcolax 3 hrs ago and 1/4 of the Miralax gone, no activity, just sounds of angry gremlins...for now. TMI?

Checked in 6:30a, wife driving me home now (8:10a). No anesthesia. They were cool about it. Ever had bad food with pre-explosive diarrhea cramps? That's what it was like. Worst part was inserting/removing IV and pulling chest hairs from removing 3 EKG leads.

I thought about messing with my wife by pretending to be asleep and saying stupid stuff...

Doc said 10 more years, but that the Brits were working on a pill-camera that you could steer through. Maybe next time.

Over & out

My wife is up next Monday. I haven't scheduled mine yet. We both have our prep kits ready to go.......so to speak. :D

I see what you did there, lol. This test is really no big deal. My doc told me that the DNA tests are getting or are good enough that the colonoscopy as a screen will become obsolete unless indicated. He said he doesn't like doing negative tests. He thought it would be coming soon, although I'm not sure when that means. I was under the influence of propofol (sp?).

This will be my fourth. I have had polyps taken out on others.

I had two polyps on the first and none on the second, was told to come back in 7 years. I know a couple people who have survived colon cancer, this test is worth every second of inconvenience IMHO, as I'm sure you know.
