Messaged me last night about that crazy guy with the landing gear issue. Kent was worried about him.
 
Rob and I have an interesting departure story.

I had filed over the phone and had gotten a 15 minute void time. But the ramper started a chain of delays to cause me to get a “refile” when I called the 800 number for release while I was sitting at the hold short line (we had passed the void time by one or two minutes. So going through the process of obtaining a fresh clearance, the jet that got fueled called up on CTAF to find out what we were doing.

Looking behind us, it was a Blue/White Honda Jet

Jay was a great member of PoA. Aside from the wing spar issue with his 601 (which I flew in with him back at 6Y9 2008) there were some other life events that occurred and got him out of flying. Most unfortunate as he was very devoted to it, and flew the crap out of his 601. BasicMed is what he'd been hoping for for years. I liked the guy quite a bit and considered him to be a good pilot.

The world is strange and unfair. Looking back over his posts and things in those years, he was a reasonable champion for light sport type aircraft and getting people interested in flying for sure.

What did they decide was the issue found during run up on Saturday.

He definitely was. He'd had his Zenith spec'd such that it could be a legal (and quite competent) IFR machine, hoping for the eventuality of what became basic med. A lot of his flying was going out and shooting practice approaches, he would've had a quick time of it. 55ZC won't be his again, but hopefully one day he can get back into something.

I will never forget Kent right there "you're going to land THAT?" I was a little aggressive, but the energy management worked out fine.

I was quite impressed. I couldn't have come down at that angle in the Mooney at idle, gear out, full flaps, speed brakes, and a full slip!

KBPK is HondaJet central now! There was a different one that landed right in front of me. I saw three there on Friday night, and asked about it. Apparently some guy put in deposits on ten of them about as soon as they took deposits, not knowing what he'd do with them, and he's now taking delivery. (They haven't all been delivered yet.) I saw at least a red one, a gray one, and a blue one. Pretty cool.

He probably bought them expecting to be able to resell them at a profit once they hit the market and people would be stuck waiting years to be able to take delivery on a new one. People were doing that with G650s as well and doing quite well. Not sure if the HondaJet is unique enough to truly be able to make that business model work with.

The premium would have to be a fairly large number I would think. Lots of money tied up for a long time, let alone insurance and operating costs, advertising. I would assume he also has them hangared.

It's a bet, like any investment. And it's a bet that will either pay off or that won't pay off.

I heard that in the G650 world they were selling the things for a $7-10M premium, so on the order of 15% profit. List price on a HondaJet is $4.5M. No idea if the price was lower at deposit time, but if it was, then that might help further.

I suppose I'm not convinced the HondaJet is truly a game changer enough to necessarily have that same appeal, but I could be wrong. And I'm not the one who can write those kinds of checks, so what I think is irrelevant. :)
 
Might have a discount in play if he ordered 10 of them, and might be part of an investment firm also. Many ways to do this.
 
I was watching flight aware yesterday for inbounds to 3M0, but didn't see anything. So, just for grins I moved the map over to Destin (one of my favorite DESTINations), and saw a twin inbound over the Eglin R space, and clicked on it. None other than our own @N747JB . Kinda cool to click on a plane and have it be a POAer.

EDIT: Another observation from looking at Flightaware yesterday: There are a ton of SR22's in the system, far more than any other piston single.
We had planned to spend the weekend, my wife got sick on Saturday, so back to the ATL! I did speak to Roger in the new tower when we landed, he's been working at the FTY tower for years! The tower wasn't open yet, they were setting stuff up and called me on the Unicom!
