Santa Monica Safe...

Was in Santa Monica last month. Such a beautiful place. I hope they leave it be.

Why do people hate airports so much?

It's disdain for the minority, combined with classic NIMBYism. Humans are gregarious. As such, minority/lone-wolf behavior is generally viewed as undesirable, and so the rest follows. NIMBY I don't have to explain, that's just classic human hypocrisy/cognitive dissonance.

We monkeys obsessed with flight are in the unfortunate position of being in the minority, as most monkeys are not one bit interested or curious to its possibilities. Insofar as the activity empowers/enables the motivations of the majority (via simpleton transportation for the majority) they tolerate it in a controlled fashion. Beyond that, it's merely anathema to the motivations of collective, simpleton and unambitious as they may be.

It WAS Miegs Field - Chicago

Man, that would have been awesome to go there. And it's in range, too. I could have had chicago deep dish for lunch...

Now it's a casino that employs thousands rather than dead real estate like an airport.

Heh.

For those who don't know, of course, it is no such thing; it is Parkland of extremely limited use and a crappy sort of arena thing. Look for "Northerly Island."

Seems like that high-rise building off the end of the runway made it of limited use....

They will regret closing the airports when a large scale disaster hits, fire, earthquake, you name it. I'm curious how long it would take southern California to run out of drinking water if the aqueduct(s) failed.

One of my work colleagues lives in Santa Monica.... a few blocks north of the 10 freeway... no where near the airport so safety and noise are not even an issue. They have no clue with my aviation hobby. Every once in a while I'll go into our LA office and run into them on occasion...

One occasion over the summer he was so proud of the fact that Santa Monica was one step closer to closing the airport... and of course let everyone know of his personal struggle to rid Santa Monica of such a useless waste of land... I had asked why he thought it should be closed and what about the golf course just on the other side of the airport.... isn't that a waste of land too?

I don't want to bore you with the following discussion, but what I did pick up is there is a strong anti-airport fake news campaign brewing in Santa Monica and this person was part of the "group-think" with absolutely no clue to the pertinent facts revolving around KSMO... just the popular talking points from the "in" crowd.

I guess in the case it is a yelling contest and whoever yells the loudest (read whoever has the most money behind them) is going to win.

thanks..
no sign of it now, on google maps!

The most disturbing thing about that closure - this wasn’t the FAA and the city deciding/negotiating to close the airport after shutting it down and giving everybody proper notice.

The mayor ordered bulldozers literally in the middle of the night one Sunday to go and destroy the runway.

As a result he stranded a bunch of GA aircraft in the hangars and tie-downs. People had to take off on the taxiway to get their airplanes out.

HEll I always wanted to land there... Just to be like I have done it. Damn shame..

Easily avoided.

Haha yep.

It’s weirding me out now that there’s an entire generation that doesn’t know Meigs existed OR that it was the default starting airport in Microsoft Flight Simulator for over a decade.

EVERYONE who flew real airplanes before a certain version of MSFS had also launched their sim at home out of Meigs and easily avoided the Sears Tower. Even if they never flew to the real deal.

Chicago is a hell hole in so many ways. I won’t even bother explaining. Meigs’ destruction was just the icing on the cake for that place.

Sears tower is not the building I was referring to.

There's still Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport available. KBKL

Were you talking about the high rise building closest to the extended runway center line in the photo? (I don't know its name.)

Go for it. There's enough undeveloped flat spots there to make it doable. The NTSB report will say "engine failed for unknown reason." Then you can sue Lycoming for building engines that fail for no dam good reason. And the airplane manufacturer for putting such an engine in their planes. And, and........

What would happen if 250+ bush planes landing on Meigs field park one evening and just started camping out calling it Occupy Meigs or something
