Nextdoor.com - Quite entertaining

Seriously, I would be certain they are planning on the eventual spin-off and sale of a multi-billion dollar business that is chock full of verifiable data linked to real names, addresses, and as you saw, contact lists.

Really genius stuff. Like facebook, but with you and all your neighbors names tied to your real street addresses with the data on all the things in your neighborhood you like, dislike, and would like to see changed if only someone could offer that service...

Mrs. Suzy Jones on 1234 Main Street and 17 of her neighbors think a sandwich place closer to them would be ideal.

And she is willing to donate to the campaign of the next candidate that is pro/anti immigrant/abortion/life if only the current idiot in her district could be run out on rails.

And she and her baby daddy will be shopping for a new home in the $300K price range near a nice preschool in a couple years because they just announced a new bun in the oven.

Etc..., for sale to anyone willing to purchase the demographics.
You pretty much nailed it dude. More and more of "us" data miners are looking for psychographic profiles rather than demographic profiles. They're much more targeted and the response/conversion ratio is much higher than straight up demographics. Sites like NextDoor and others of their ilk (aka social media) and the information they provide is like having your own gold mine. :yesnod:

I ran our local community chat group, on FB.
The biggest favor I did for myself in 2017 was to hand over the reins to someone else, omg.

All the missing cats... I like cats, but if you let them go outside expect them to eventually not come home.

Agreed.
I have a pool cover on my inground. The kind that has the mesh/straps which sort of form squared sections.
A neighborhood cat decided to play tic tac toe crapping on different squares each day. Then the rains came. Not good.
The cat disappeared (not me).
Then a few days later, I kept hearing this weird noise... like squishing and squeaking. Very weird.
After about a half hour I discovered this f***ing cat had sneaked into our house and had kittens under our bed.
Never saw the cat again.
Dont' want to talk about the kittens.

One lady in my neighborhood mentioned that she lost a cat that wasn't fixed. And the reason the owners gave for it not being fixed, was because it was an indoor cat..</facepalm>.

I have two cats, BOTH are indoor and BOTH are fixed..don't be stupid people..

Which is even more reason to post crazy crap like, "Anyone love Coast to Coast AM"? LOL... or any other random s*** to screw the stupid data miners.

We had someone show up on our NextDoor site inquiring that they heard rifle shots in the neighborhood. We're way out in the boonies, of course there are rifle shots. Not only are we on the edge of dedicated game lands but people hunt in the relatively undisturbed by development woods and we've got a few guys who have private gun ranges.

The followups were hilarious.

NextDoor sounds like some sort of swingers website

We're members on nextdoor here in vegas, and it gets entertaining from time to time.. Like the guy ranting about the HOA being sicced on him for his dog being out front off leash

Does anyone know where nextdoor.com gets its financial support?

They showed me a very nice match.com ad today.

Judging by the description of how well their data mining works here, and applying that to the fact that the vast majority in our neighborhood aren’t single, I’m guessing they’re doing it like every other online ad paid business...

Lying about how well targeted their ad engine is. :) Because someone believes their BS enough that people are worried about it here. LOL.

And then, there are these ads of course:

Also, the time when the distinction between "like new", and "new" has never been more important:

Seriously... has anybody EVER picked up a used toilet?

I knew some guys who had one in the back of their pick-up truck, used it as a beer cooler. Always good for laughs, or if ya gotta go I guess.

It was obvious the house in Butte had used toilets installed when the house was built. People get them for the larger flush volumes on the old ones.

That’s funny. One of our neighbors also uses one for that during his annual “redneck Ranch party.” Never heard anyone ask him if it’s used. Haha.

I've seen it done, especially when their house is equipped with one of the low-flow clog-easily terlets and the used toilet being given away is a good, old time, large-tank type that gives a satisfying "swoosh" as all the crap is flushed away.

On ONE flush too!
US Guvment, making life better for Americans.

I am looking for a couple of those good high flow toilettes to get rid of the low flows in the new house. I do plan to make the nice new low flow-multi flush toilettes into yard art.

I tease my wife when it takes her 6 flushes.....:lol::lol:

I understand saving 1 gallon per flush in a city of over a million people, but 3 people living on one water well and a septic system, I need the crap to flow down hill....

I've been a ND admin since it launched a few years ago. It is not such a bad idea to connect neighbors for numerous reasons (safety, locality, announcements etc). Too bad the human element got involved, though.
Now y'all call it "social medium" and I cannot disagree. As ND grew, it turned into another Fecesbook full or morons, whinies, crazies etc. Everyone and their brother/mother/sister/nephew/niece has an opinion and must share it. And they all have something to sell and a lawnmowing or house cleaning service to peddle (even though that is against the rules). And a lot of people just sign up and violate the RoC with their first post. :)

Aaaahhhh, I might start calling NextDoor "FaceList" because it is as if Fecesbook merged with CraigsList.

The funniest part is that there are people who attack each other viciously without realizing they might be talking to the same person they wave at every morning when driving to work. :D

I installed one of those American Standard "single flush" deals that I got from Home Depot. Had it in for over 5 yrs now (maybe closer to 10), and has never clogged. It has a larger flap valve mechanism inside the tank so the entire tank gets "dropped" pretty much all at once. And the siphon dimensions are pretty large diameter.

I think there are other competitors out there, but this was a pretty simple DIY and I think some of the other brands are sold only through plumbers or other types of dealers. Just do a quick search on "single flush" and check out the ratings and videos.

I pulled a post I made from the site.

When I put it up, I specifically removed any tagging from the post because my mention of the business was not a recommendation - it was a mention (the place is OK, but not at the level of recommending). Overnight, Nextdoor went back and tagged the post themselves again after I removed the tag initially - they did email me. Torqued me off because it specifically went against my intent. So I again untagged it and this time removed the post altogether. No other option, no way to email or contact support, no help desk, and they get to exploit your posts by turning them to "likes" with a tag and then selling that to advertisers.

ND can kiss my ***. I won't be posting there again if I can help it.

Ya think maybe that NextDoor wants to put the arm on businesses to PAY like Yelp, Angies List and others do?

"We can make sure Mr. Suffa's condemnation of your business is FIRST in search results!"

This thread reminded me to finish setting up my neighborhood. Suddenly it has 20 members. I have no idea how they were contacted.

Oh, yeah, they're going to make an offer the businesses "can't refuse"...

My post was not a condemnation nor a compliment, just a mere statement of fact. I've been to the business - a restaurant - maybe 3 times, food good but there's a chemical smell from the disinfectant they use. I prefer another restaurant a block away that has good food but is noisy inside (like 95+ dB of noise on a smartphone sound meter).

Equifax. ;)

Yes, I would get one. No worse than using any toilet in a house you bought. Or a hotel room. Or any public restroom. I'd sterilize it with bleach of course. When we move and look for a house, an older one with the high water toilets is a plus for me.

Some of the higher end low flow toilets work pretty well now. But you've gotta buy the $500 toilet, not the $199 unit.

Too bad the human element got involved, though.

I’ve been thinking that since the day I helped turn up my first data center with Internet servers in it. ;)

And how in the world did this thread become a deep discussion of toilets, anyway? LOL.

Today I Learned: That the female named thing/animal/human/whatever that keeps getting out is a Great Pyrenees dog, and she likes to lie down in the road.

Brilliant. That’s one big speed bump if someone isn’t paying attention.

And someone needs the address of our HOA, because apparently the Googles are broken where he lives and a whole website with a contact button is unfindable. I hope it doesn’t spread to my house. :)

my neighborhood is boring... no missing pigs. just a bunch junk peddlers

Likewise. I think my neighbors would be too boring to engage in social media with.

Plus, neighbors and family is a little too close to be tracked by on social media.

You'd be surprised at the piddly crap that will get even boring neighbors whipped up to a froth!

One of the toilettes I need to replace is a newer high dollar low flow. That is not the problem. The problem is I need water to wash everything down to the septic tank. And that takes more than .9 gallons of water.

Like I said, I see the reasoning for saving one gallon of water per flush in a town of 500K and larger. But I have only 3 toilettes trying to push everything to the septic tank. I have one water well, and maybe next summer two wells, so I don't pay for water by the gallon.

I catch the gray water out of the house to water the wife's garden and what I hope will be grass growing in my yard, so bathing won't flush out the line to the septic tank.

I have a 3 gallon unit you can have. Contractor grade from the 60’s. On the plus side it does have a korky quiet fill valve...

No, you can’t have either of the 5 gallon units.
