Gaston's Fly-In 2017 - Thursday Oct 12-Sunday Oct 15, 2017

Or what came out of the 182's engine when the oil was changed.

Yep - looks like it might be poured into the oil tank or the gas tank - time will tell...

Nah, it always looks darker in the carboy. It's about the color of a pale ale.

Of course there is the yeast cake in there which doesn't exactly look appetizing.

Looks like we're headed toward about 104 bottles of freshly brewed brewski between me and brYan. Stay thirsty my friends.
Just 104??? what is everyone else going to drink?

Sweet @masloki is coming. I will pour out my home brew now.
That dude can brew some top notch grog that puts my swill to shame.

My labels are way cute though...

I heard that. Last year's offering from masloki was mighty delicious. Yours was tasty too Bry.

New Gaston's rule: Everybody must drink masloki's beer first. When you get tipsy enough that it doesn't matter what your drinking, you can switch to 6PC and my brew to finish getting hammered.

So I guess now it's time to really start discussing food. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, so I suggest we stick to tacos for Friday night and grilling out on Saturday night. As for breakfasts and lunches, I say it's every man for himself, mostly because I don't want to spend the whole weekend cooking. I've added columns for everyone to list what they'll be bringing for each of the meals. Keep an eye on it, so that we make sure we have it balanced out.

Suggested Items for Friday: Ground beef, taco seasoning, taco shells, tortillas, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, salsa, queso, guacamole, sour cream, tortilla chips, desserts

Suggested Items for Saturday: Hamburger patties, hot dogs, brats, hamburger/hot dog buns, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mustard, relish, baked beans, potato salad, chips, dips, desserts

We forget... Are there grills out there or have folks been bringing them in?
What is the simplest way to get a burgers/brats grilled?

I don't think there is a grill by the runway, but I could be wrong.

I recall smaller grills by the cabins, but none near the spot at the runway where we hang out.

Maybe the management has something we can borrow?

And what are we doing for shade?

I have a 10'x10' EZ-Up canopy. @JCranford ... can your longer aircraft handle this? I think I can fit it into 55WB, but as you saw from a previous year, it's not the most optimal positioning between the bag area and the rear seat area.

maybe we pass the hat to get you a cargo pod...

There are grills that can be brought to the flightline - management might even bring them for us. In addition, they will upon request bring a big barrel cooler full of ice.

So Friday Night Tacos. Looks like we need veggies, sides and desserts.

Who has the dinner cabin? I "think" it is cabin 6 where we had the taco buffet last year?

I want to go but I need get my BFR done first... I am now thinking of getting my tailwheel endorsment as the BFR so it may take longer... Do they have RV spots at Gaston's? I am going to check and if they do I might bring the RV smoker and bar.....

IIRC the folks at Gastons provided the grills upon request

No. Gaston's is in the business of renting cabins and rooms. They do not allow camping or RV hook-up-ing on site. There is a campground down the road from Gaston's a couple miles I believe. Im just not sure how youre gonna get from there to Gaston's, since (hopefully) most of us'll be in planes, not cars (like last year...)

True enough I just talked to Gaston's and it's a mile away. Oh well so much for that.... I guess I just need to get that BFR done... I hope to see everyone there...

I know we borrowed the grills from the front desk. I don't recall if they are gas or charcoal, or if there was a fee.

Yeast are doing their thing to the beers now. Once I get a taste test in a couple weeks, I will drop a note on what I am bringing. Aiming to bring five growlers so we may need to make this a longer weekend when paired up with Okieflyers and 6PC.

Do your FR there, someone bound to be a CFI attending?

I bet EdFred would do it. Lance is also a CFI

There ya go rdkF250, no excuse now lol. I wouldn't do your landings there though in front of that crowd. They'd be out there mooning you and holding up score signs.

I cannot fly without it though so scheduling between now and then is the issue. I am seriously considering taking off a few days to knock it out though. Time is the issue as always....

Better than the 6Y9 folks. They wouldn't buy "Big Yellow X" from me so the closed the runway on me the old fashioned way when I was flying in.

So........

We seem to have a round about idea that some sort of taco buffet will work for Friday night.
Definitely going to need what the Mennonites referred to as "A location".

This would be a place where food could be prepared, served and allow people to gather.
Think Fridge, stove, table, chairs.

Does anyone with a large centrally located cabin wish to provide this "Location" so that the gathering, cooking, eating, drinking can take place?
Did anyone snag cabin 6 when T-Dub released it?

Assuming that this location will be provided and the above mentioned consumption event will actually take place, others might want to start filling in some of the things they will be bringing here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ii2WNLA8C8BJ5YomMt67VEbA9rWfgBz5aqNAWRwKXTw/edit#gid=0

Here are some pictures of things you could add to the list if you wanted to
Basically, we need more consummables for a group that will maybe be about 25-ish folks.
Chips, guac, cheese, beans, rice, queso, cocaine, flan, etc...

What Goes With Tacos.PNG

Ok, I know this is going to grind operation "We're running the risk of being unprepared" to a halt.....

But... What. About. Saturday? We just doing the restaurant? Or do we want to try to double down on what I call "The plan"?
If someone can confirm the availability of a grill, burgers and brats would be a simple (cheaper than the restaurant) option but
dipping your toe in the saturday night dinner spreadsheet column will be a requirement if we go that route.

I can put a picture of what that might look like as well should we elect to go that direction.

Can someone give ole Gasty-gas a ring and find out about the Loaneridge of a grill if the attendees seem to feel that this option is in fact an option we might veer toward?

Alright Gaston's attendees, Hands in the center. "We can do it" on 3.
