It's going to be nasty up to N GA before long. With the layout of FL one does have to start with flying North.

Seems like the way to go would be to head to (say) Charleston, then work your way back south when weather permits.

I like the idea of the plylox, but like you said, storing plywood for years is awkward. However I have found that I always need a couple of pieces of plywood for something, so I might buy a few before the next hurricane, then when the season is over, I will just use them for various projects. A good grade of marine plywood should be able to last several hurricane seasons in the garage and they won't take up too much room laying flat against the wall.

I have hurricane rated impact windows, but I also have three French doors that could use shutters or plywood. This might be a good idea but I have a question about their use. My door frames are 72 inches wide by 80 inches high, so each door frame will require two sheets of plywood. How would I secure the two sheets together, or should I just not worry about that. If I lay one 72" w x 48h sheet sideways and another sheet that is 72w" by 32h" should I splice the 72" sides somehow to make one big sheet?

Fortunately our barn has open rafters. I laid the sheets up there, and they've been fine for over 12 years. There's probably less likelihood for warping if you're able to lay them flat, rather than storing them on edge like against a wall.

I'm wondering why Georgia's airspace is so empty, except for Atlanta and north of there. Is it because the weather really is bad there already, or is southern Georgia mainly flyover country for Florida and points south?

Cloud cover is fairly low and it's unpredictable gusts. I'd need a real good reason to go up right now, though if I had my IR and another 200 hours I'd probably fly in it.

I think the real answer is, where do you have to go with a tropical storm heading your way?

It's mostly rural and swamps, but a number of cities have airline service and GA is very much alive there. And yes, there are flyover planes but that's everywhere.
 
Meant to ask this days ago, but with Irma hogging the spotlight, what's going on in TX where Harvey was? Updates? I know Jay informs us, just wondering about the other areas.

To start with, since no airliners are going into Florida, there are very few routes that carry them into South Georgia. Second, from a GA perspective, it is already pretty breezy here just North of Atlanta. Not sure I'd go up in these conditions for a joy ride. I'm sure it is worse to the South.

Harvey/Houston is old news. Just as Irma/Florida will be when the next disaster happens. People have short attention spans and memories.

But I was in a store yesterday, one of the few that were open due to Irma, and there was a jar on the counter asking for donations for Houston. And people were putting money in it while buying supplies to try to save their own hides.
 
Im going to try to start my way back from PA, anybody have experience 100LL outages in Louisiana area (I know Harvey hit the refineries pretty hard). I plan to do a end run around it.

Harvey, that was last week.

For the past 48hrs CNN has been telling us that FL will be separated from the mainland by a giant Sharknado. 24hrs from now when we all find out that it isn't so, they will move on to the next 'news' like the size of Kim Kardashians butt. They provide entertainment to sell ad slots. Hurricanes, wars, Ebola are tools in that business.

The stateOSHA investigation on that one would have some really simple questions: "Why exactly did you station an employee standing in an unprotected area during passage of the eyewall?" And "Okay, I understand you wanted to have higher ratings which in turn generates more revenue, do you believe an employee has to risk injury or death to do their job?"
