Greetings. Dick Goetze here, checking in with my first post. I began flying a long time ago, and still enjoy it. My first solo was in April 1951 flying a J-3 Cub on floats. Since then I have flown a number of civilian and military aircraft. During Vietnam I flew the AC-47, Puff the Magic Dragon. That was 1200 hrs in one year, of which 1000 hrs were night time. Later, I flew and stood nuclear alert in the B-52G.

My current flying is in a Grand Renaissance Turbo Commander 690A. We have the plane stationed at KGAI which unfortunately is just within the Washington DC restricted area, so that means virtually all our flying is on IFR flight plans. There are two of us who are partners in the plane. We have not been doing much flying recently, so we are looking for one or two more partners. That will be the subject of a separate forum post.

It is great to be part of this organization.

Welcome to the joint Dick. Did you do all your trainging on water up to the solo?

Welcome. Sounds like you have a lot of interesting stories to tell, I'll be looking forward to hearing them.

Yes, I did all my flying in a J-3 on floats until I got my private certificate. All that flying was on the Long Island Sound, near Stamford CT. I earned my SEL rating in a J-3 at White Plains (KHPN).

FormerHangie, Thanks for the welcome. Yes, in about 66 years of flying I have accumulated a few 'stories'. Looking forward to sharing them.

hey neighbor.....welcome from FDK. :D

Checkout my six, Thanks for the welcome. I get to KFDK several times a year, but I fly over it (and RUANE) on almost every return to KGAI.

With the taxiway closed for a while, and the need to backtaxi, operating out of KGAI is getting to be a challenge. The no T&G restriction helps a little, but it must be really difficult for the flight schools.

As an Air Force guy, I guess I am not supposed to know or say anything nice about the Navy. But, after retirement I taught for the Naval War College, and worked with the Naval Postgraduate School for over ten years. That said, on 7 Oct when Air Force plays Navy on the fields of friendly strife, it will be "Go Air Force, Sink Navy.

George, every Saturday a group of us that we affectionately call the "Airport Bums" meet at the airport cafe at KGAI at 0800 for breakfast, and to swap lies about our flying adventures. If you are ever there at that time on a Saturday morning, say hello.

The Veterans Airlift Command is a very special opportunity. Our Turbo Commander has easy access for those who have lost one or both legs. Recently we have not been as active with VAC, but hopefully in the near future we can re-engage.

My time in Vietnam was May 67-May 68. I flew out of Pleiku. There was an EC-47 outfit there also. The AC-130 was one hell of an airplane.

That is awesome. I retired in Dec 1989, so most of our service was in different times and a different Air Force as an institution.
