Garmin GFC 500 with dual G5 under 9k

I'd get the electric trim option too, even tho it can be added later.

The ad is conflicting tho as it says G5 sold separately way at the bottom

this is what they are saying in Whats Included

GMC 507
  • GSA 28 servos (2 or 3)
  • GFC 500 STC Install Kit
  • G5 Attitude Indicator
  • G5 HSI w/GPS Nav Interface

I don't get it. the AP is some 6800 and dual G5 is another 5k. its not available for piper rt now anyway, but interested to know nonetheless. at the bottom it says G5 sold separately, which they pretty much Copy pasted from Garmin's website. the ad does say Install Only.. so may be this is just the install price?

Install only means they do not sell outright or over the counter.

I think the G5s are backordered for about 3 months already. The autopilot is gonna make that worse lol.

Which means by the time Garmin gets the STC for the Cessna 172s and the cherokees, the manufacturing line for the G5s will be in full production.

Interesting question - does Garmin build everything in Wichita or is it outsourced to Foxconn or similar?

I'd buy that for my 182 if I could get it for $10k installed!

The web page is not binding, select the Easy Quote button and then you'll find out what it will cost. Even if it costs $15K, it's still a good deal.

I would guess 30 hours of install.

I just saw a quote on Beechtalk for dual G5s (no AP), for 40 hours!
Which makes cost to be around $9K for the G5s alone!
Care to revise your guess?

Cessna 182 panel is easier to work than a Beech, another plus for the high wings.

I'd take the wheel pants off (if installed) and take the doors off for major installs.

You'll have to pay for removal of any existing autopilot. This may including buying and installing non-autopilot control cables/bellcranks, brackets etc. I would want all the old wiring out too.

I'm hopeful they bring the GFC 500 to the M20J... I'd love to take all the King stuff and my vacuum system and throw it away, er, sell it, er whatever.

Flew in a 172 yesterday with the G5. It was pretty nice...but I’m amazed they want $2200 for that little thing. Totally nuts. Cost of certified avionics is a joke

Really?! You are judging it based on it’s size. So you would be okay with the price if it was bigger?

That's funny. When I first saw it I was amazed all they wanted was 2G's for that thing. Considering the price of old school electric AI's, I was happy.

I think he may be referring to the fact that the 'experimental' version of the G5 is only $1200 and has more features than the STC'ed one at twice the price.

The STC one is almost identical to the experimental one now. Hopefully dual nav interface is approved soon. Probably won't ever be an approved altitude encoder

At least things have started moving in the right direction for getting lower cost solutions for modern electronics into the certified spam cans.

That I can agree with

Looks like Dynon is getting very close to STC'ing their Skyview HDX system. I think that will be a serious game changer and I imagine it will drive Garmin to STC their G3X. 2018 could get really interesting when these STC's happend, especially with the new lower cost auto-pilots that are on the horizon too.

I think Garmin's entry here is the G500 TXi. I don't know if they really have enough room between a dual G5 type setup and the G500 TXi to make it worth doing anything else.

I have the dual G5's on order now (4-6 weeks expected delivery). Paid about $5500 for the instruments, install another 4K. The only autopilot that interfaces with it is the GFC500...which is not yet STC'd for the Grummans.

Cessna 172, 182 guys, Piper Cherokees, they have those ready, and I hear the Mooney guys are up next.

Actually, the HSI can drive heading/nav/GPSS with several legacy autopilots with the GAD 29B.. well, if you have an autopilot already.

The problem for me is it won't replace the Attitude Indicator side for the King units, so I'm stuck with the King somewhere in the panel and the vacuum system. Thus my hope for the Mooney GFC500... (Alternatively a GAD 29C that provides the attitude indicator signals)

After I finished my instrument lesson this afternoon, my instructor told me that he just got a G5 installed in his Cherokee. After we finished our debrief and log book entries, we walked around to his hangar for him to show me the G5. I have seen a G5 in the Garmin booth on their mock panel but had not seen one in a real panel. I was a little surprised at how small it was. I didn't remember it looking that small at the Garmin booth or either I've gotten so use to looking at the internet pictures that make it feel a bit larger. Apart from the small size, I really like it. I think my instructor is planning to add the second one soon so he can ditch his vacuum system. I'm still in the wait and see mode to see what other glass panel options we will get STC'ed for 2018.
