What is the new VFR Free!?
VFR Free! is basically all of WingX with a few exceptions: VFR Free! does not include the IFR Low and High Enroute Charts, Approach Charts, Internet Weather, Synthetic Vision, and some other IFR-related functionality (subject to change).
For student pilots, VFR Free! will help reduce their training costs. We are very pleased to offer this free service and support general aviation trainees towards obtaining their certificates and ratings.

VFR Free! is not limited to student pilots. All pilots can take advantage of this opportunity. VFR Free! is planned to be available this month (hopefully during Airventure).

Along with their deal for CFIs, they're really gunning for some market share. Interesting.

Kinda looking forward to playing with it when my airplane returns from the land of cheese and airplanes.

Great offer! Every pilot with an iOS device should download this if there's room on their device.

If only for the sectional charts or as a backup if their primary EFB goes down.

What's iOS.......!

We tested the (paid) Android version yesterday and I was very pleased to see that it now interfaces to my Navworx ADS-B. Hopefully the free version works on Android as well.

Good idea.

I'll just keep paying for the full version, money drives innovation

I've been happy with WingX. I get it for free and it's not some stripped down version.

What an offer. I have been using WingX for over five years now and love it. Like Scrabo, I don't mind paying for WingX so Hilton and company can keep putting out updates and new features.

There's hints in the Press Release that they may actually someday get the silly thing working well on Amazon Fire tablets. That would be a game-changer, price-wise. Seems like it's about time for a sea change away from overpriced iPads soon.

WingX only requires 4.5Gigs vs 11 for ForeFlight. Compression technology or some such - totally transparent as far as I can tell.

I have been meaning to pick up a cheap android tablet and give WingX a try on it. The Android development seem to have stalled for a while but looks Ike it's been picked up again.

I pay for Foreflight, but will probably try this now to see if I prefer it. Thanks for the post.

All the IFR stuff, 3D, Weather, airport diagrams while taxiing.
On the down side, sometimes things work better than at other times.
Avare isn't as elegant, but I use it exclusively.
I just couldn't see paying Garmin's per feature charges, so I canceled my subscription.
Never even looked at XWing.

I have been using (when i can) FlyQ EFB... free VFR and IFR for life for me .. :happydance::happydance:

I noticed that. I also noticed they don't call the Fire version the same as the Android version anymore, too different.

Airport diagrams while taxiing is pretty common feature these days on must apps - great for unfamiliar airports.

After reading the Avare source code, I've never gone near it again. I stick to FltPlan Go for my free backup.

The source for the others probably looks as bad... the industry isn't exactly raising the bar in code quality overall these days. If anything the industry has institutionalized all of the excuses for crappy code well past the doors of "engineering" and out into the sales and marketing processes of most software companies. Patches are "just normal" now, on a schedule, for example.

I use WingX Pro, the paid version, and I am really happy with it. Well worth it to me. Like has been said, making the free VFR version will likely be a game changer for them, might lose some revenue from VFR only guys but letting more people use it should hopefully bring in more paying customers. I tried FF and Garmin Pilot (which I also liked) and WingX ended up being the right choice for me. No I am not a paid spokesman, just like the product. I have avare on my phone but don't use it much. Nothing fancy but has some nice features.

Give it out free, then end the freebie when they get a bunch of new folks onboard.

So I downloaded and looked for the .99 cent subscription. Cannot find anything. Am I doing something wrong? How to get the free version?

Its not released yet.

So what happened? A month later and still nothing.

Good question -last time I contacted Hilton, it was targeted for late August or so.

Did this ever happen? (VFR Free) Currently a student pilot and would be happy to pay once flying full time, but seemed like a great option if you weren't certified.

I subscribed for the low-price offer last year ($49?) but have not used the app in flight! I have another month left, so I'll try it sometime before then. If it's really free I may keep using it.

Been running Avare on my Droid tablet. FltPlan Go crashes on the tablet but works just fine on my phone. Go figure!

I haven't been able to find the free ios version. Just looked and the last update to the Wing-X Pro was 5 months ago...

Two different things. There's the cost of the app itself and the subscription cost. The VFR Free version was supposed to not have a subscription cost. That's what's known as an "in-app purchase". The normal cost is about $75/year. VFR Free was supposed to eliminate some functionality that is tied to IFR operations and have a free subscription. That was what started this thread and to the best of my knowledge, hasn't happened yet

Had the full wing X for free being a CFI, ended up deleting it and paying the 200ish a year for foreflight, I use it heavily and can write it off my taxes, foreflight is just a ton more software.
