Is there any profit in refurbishing aircraft?

In this week's Aviation Week there is an article in which Rockwell-Collins says the cost of certifying avionics has exceeded the cost of developing and manufacturing avionics.

Uhhhh, I would have thought that happened a long time ago.

Uh-oh. Looks like @azblackbird has had his "ejection handle pulled".

This thread has really gone off the skids. I'm still wondering, in view of what's been written here, how Van Bortel makes a profit at the refurbing they do. Of course, I'm sure they start with fairly well kept-up planes, not ratty old ramp queens. But still... or do they actually make enough from their new aircraft sales that they can afford to take a loss on that side of their business? I tend to doubt that, but... :dunno:

They buy good planes below wholesale price during trade-ups . None of them require a full-up restoration. Maybe seats or paint or an overhaul. They then sell them above retail to customers that are less price sensitive than the average cheapskate on POA. They are also not noobs at this.

Yes, there can be profit in restorations. A number of people have confirmed it in this thread.

When the OP mentioned that he 'sold a courier company' it was a tipoff that he was the same character looking for a plane to ship cars sometime last year.

Does that mean he is banned?

Atleast temporarily. I wonder if that means Alex Siemens is banned too? :D

I believe we are not supposed to discuss reasons for the ban-hammer. Doing so is a ban-able offense which again leads to more discussions and further bans.

If I was speculating about why he was banned (and I am not), I would suspect that it was for sock-puppetry.

Actually, I've never heard anything more well put, and spot on, than @starglider 's post, #396. He nailed it.
