BasicMed checklist and online course now available

Your point to check the rulez is spot on
Another point for clubs is to verify with their insurance agent on how the wording of the policy addresses medical qualification. Most, like ours, are likely worded so that BasicMed is okay. But there may be others that won't work until modified.

Was Line #9 one of the items he laughed at?
Yes. There was no exam and we just discussed any issues or history.

Thanks for that real-life report.
So what did your primary care physician do for the eye test? Did he just have you look at a chart on the wall? Did he have some books with color charts?

Exactly that. He had a Snellen chart and the Ishihara Test for Colour Deficiency book. I laughed and took a picture of it because it took him a few minutes to find and I thought it was still in its wrapper (turns out just cellophane on the cover). He said its been ages since he had to use it.

For the peripheral vision he just moved his finger around my face until I couldn't see it any more.

Like I said, there is no exam REQUIRED by the FAA for a classed medical, UNLESS there is a reason based on medical history or as requested by the applicant.

BasicMed DOES require it, regardless of history or request.
BasicMed requires inspection of the anus. It does NOT require a digital exam.

From the Guide for Aviation Medical Examiners
II. Examination Techniques
1. Digital Rectal Examination: This examination is performed only at the applicant's option unless indicated by specific history or physical findings. When performed, the following should be noted and recorded in Item 59 of FAA Form 8500-8.
2. If the digital rectal examination is not performed, the response to Item 39 may be based on direct observation or history.

I had my exam yesterday and didn't have to drop my drawers, but I have in the past, and much history with the doc. You guys are way too worried about this. If you get to be over 50 and your doc isn't checking you for early signs of prostate cancer, you better get a new doc!

Also, took the Basic Med Self Assessment Course on the AOPA site yesterday. It was pretty easy with a 20 question quiz at the end. I completed all of the requirement to fly under Basic Med yesterday, and am ready to start exercising those privileges on 5/1.

My doc's clinic no longer does any kind of prostate screening for healthy patients of any age. I think that's become common, because of the trouble caused by false positives.

How to conduct the exam is at the discretion of the doctor. It could simply be, "Have any problems down there? Nope, let's move on." This is fundamentally the same as an AME exam.

Well, my statement still stands! Just because a clinic doesn't want to screen for it doesn't mean you wont get it and need treatment. Are you good finding out once it becomes stage 4 and is a much bigger problem?

As another point of reference: I contacted my primary care physician and sent them a copy of the form and asked if he would have any issue completing it as a part of my annual physical. His response was that he reviewed it and would have no issue filling it out and signing it.

I'm scheduled for a physical in February 2018 and my third class is good until 2019 but I'll go ahead and swap over to basic med next year.

It's not about me.

The medical community for the last few years has been debating whether to screen with digital exams, PSA tests, or not at all. The latter is the choice of the clinic where I go, which is a large research hospital. Your doctor might hew to a different side of the debate.

So I called my new AME's office today to inquire whether he will be doing BasicMed exams. The front desk person sounded at first as if she had never heard of BasicMed, and asked me to explain my question. Once I'd done that, though, she said they were "very familiar" with it, and yes, he will be doing the exams. Earliest they could fit me in, though, is May 12.

That's a little better than the 18th though, which is the soonest my PCP could fit me in. Given my PCP may not have the equipment to do everything required (in particular, color vision testing), I'd rather go to the AME anyway.

Just a couple more weeks, give or take... :)

It's very likely your PCP, or one of the people in the office, has a copy of the Ishihara book laying around that they never use :D

My PCP said he has one from back when used to do DOT physicals before the rules changed and only DOT certified doctors could do them.

Yeah it's possible they have the slides, but there's no guarantee and I'd rather go with the sure thing than be waiting all summer for another appointment. Seems everyone is booked several weeks out now, and who knows how much worse it's gonna get?
