The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
This started from a discussion on the AOPA board where some were grousing when BasicMed starts and some planning on going to their physician before May 1st. Dr. Bruce reminded them that they had to wait, and then I couldn't help myself by putting my own spin on what he said.

The blanks for use on the doctor's form are not downloadable until May 1.

May 1 is that date.
This sounds better when this is converted to a BasicMed version of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch...

PILOTS: Run away! Run away!

ARTHUR: Right. How many Medical certifications are there?

LAUNCELOT: Professional Airline Pilots, that's First Class

GALAHAD: working Commercial Pilots, that's Second Class

ARTHUR: And everyone else. That's five.

GALAHAD: Third, sir.

ARTHUR: Third, yes Three. And we'd better not risk another frontal assault, that AME and the regulations are dynamite.

ROBIN: Would it help to confuse him if we run away more?

ARTHUR: Oh, shut up and go and change your jumpsuit.

GALAHAD: Let us taunt it! He may become so cross that he will make a mistake.

ARTHUR: Like what?

GALAHAD: Well...

LAUNCELOT: We have the Holy BasicMed!

ARTHUR: Yes, of course! The Holy BasicMed of Antioch! 'Tis one of the sacred relics Brother Michael Berry carries with him! Brother Michael! Bring up the Holy BasicMed! [singing] How does it, uh... when can it be used?

LAUNCELOT: I know not my liege.

ARTHUR: Consult the book of Air Regulations.

MICHAEL: Air Regulations, Chapter Sixty-Eight, Verses Nine to Twenty-One.

BROTHER: "And Saint Inhofe raised the BasicMed up on high saying, 'Oh, FAA, bless this thy BasicMed that with it thou mayest allow thy pilots to fly thither and yon, in thy mercy.' And the FAA did grin, and people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large --"

MICHAEL: Skip a bit, Brother.

BROTHER: "And the FAA spake, saying, 'May 1st shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be May 1st. May 2nd shalt thou not count, nor either count thou April 30th, excepting that thou then proceed to May 1st... April 25th is right out! Once the May 1st, being the first day of the month, be reached, then takes thou thy Holy BasicMed of Antioch towards thou state licensed physician, who being naughty in my sight, shall issue it.'"

MICHAEL: Amen.

ALL: Amen.

Where's the funny part? Is there going to be a funny part? I hope there's a funny part. I like funny.

The exam can be done as soon as soon as OMB approves the form which Brad Z, who seems to have inside info on this topic, says will likely be out in the next week or so.

I'm confused: "May 1. You have to do the internet course and do the DUI check from the course and that goes live May 1."

I need to have a DUI by May 1st to use Basic Med? Can I use an old one?

Starting to sound like the corporate "Sexual harassment training" where we are reminded how to do it correctly.

I think that the real problem here is that we have insertion of red board material into the blue board. The result of course is a purple board but that is already taken. It's most definitely an interwebz foul.

In all seriousness... Was unaware of a "DUI check" with basic med?

When you do the online course you will be required to click on a consent for the FAA to run you through the National Driver Registry so they can check for DUI's and alcohol/drug related suspensions. That happens now anyway when you apply for a regular medical certificate.

Got it... So nothing new/additional to current 3rd class. Quoted snip of post made it seem like an independent task, vs checking a box/signing a form.

When I saw "Basic Med of Antioch" I was about ready to grab my checkbook and drive down to Antioch.

Driving not permitted.... only skipping along clapping two empty (swallow delivered) coconut shells together.

I'm assuming it's Monty Python. I never get Monty Python jokes.

But yeah, I'd expect the forms and training course to go live about a week before the effective date. No DUIs required.

This poor little guy got replaced by BasicMed @AggieMike ?!. Tragic.

He's busy trying to gnaw through the support for the shelf in my home office closet, in perpetuity.

And now thanks to the story re-write, he's unemployed. Poor bunny.

May I ask where you're getting your information? You predicted the FAQ update a few weeks ago regarding being able to get the exam done as soon as the form comes out as oppose waiting until May 1st and you were right about that so obviously you have some inside info. I'm not an AOPA member so I can't access the red board, but I know there's some discussion there too.

I'm hoping to get the exam done next week before I go on vacation.

Seeing how "next week" is April 23 through April 29, those days pre-date May 1st. All indications are saying that both the Doctor's form and the Online course will go live on May1st, and not sooner than that (which was what Dr. Bruce was trying to say and the idea behind the humor of my parody).

Sometimes our favorite aviation administration exceeds our expectations.

Official checklist and online course are now available.

8700.2 BASICMED SECTION 3: MEDICAL EXAMINATION line 9 on the form....

Just wondering.....

Remember this form? See #39.
[chuckle] never saw that side of the form..... but that reminds me of what Gary Crump said in one of the AOPA webinars... The creators of the form were pulling from an older version of the 8500-8. So that explains the retentiveness of this line (see what I did there?).

Nonetheless, no AME ever actually looked there... Though I think one did ask if I was having any exhaust issues.....

Just remember - exam first, then take the course. Seems backwards, but at the end of the course, you have to enter information about your exam to print out your certificate.

You can still start/do the online course BEFORE you go see the doctor. But you'll need the doc's signoff and some information from him to input so you can print out the items you need to keep with you when you fly.

So you can review the online course now, and then return later to finish it.

Congress told the FAA to use the old 8500-8 form for the basis of the CMEC (8700-2). The current 8500 form only exists in MedXpress.

Gee, I live down the road from Antioch (college) and haven't seen a basic med form. Do they have them in the bookstore?

Cheers

Out of curiosity I did the course really is "basicmed" pretty straight forward. My class three is good until next February so I will run through it again in February before my annual physical or right after. You can do then go back in and print the certificate after you get the info from the doctor.
