This had been a passion project for me. I have always wanted to put together a guide to WingX to help new and existing users, get the most out of WingX.

During a recent 6 week out of town work assignment – I found I had the time in the evenings – so what started as a good idea, quickly grew to the point where it is today.

At some point I have to raise the flag and say “I am done” – that day is today.

The link posted below is to a PDF file on Google Drive, it is to the first public release, but I expect there to be some revisions required once people read it and if possible make suggestions.

Feedback/comments can be sent to fallenbrick2014@gmail.com or IM within this forum – I welcome all corrections and suggestions

Hope you find it useful.

Agreed

I cross posted it on some other forums as well.

Have you thought about allowing it to continue by putting it on something like Bitbucket for revisions and what not with you still in control, or not, as you please?

Also is it openly licensed for derivative works if someone wanted to take what you've started and add to it?

Just thoughts. By default you own the copyright on it unless otherwise stated specifically.

I'll look into that.... its a great idea.

Tony, I deleted all of my old versions out of my Kindle app and downloaded the latest version. I may have a few more comments coming. I hope to have a little spare time this weekend to go through it again.

Mods - if this is not allow - please delete.

We have been approached on other forums about offering to pay something for the guide. This was not done for financial gain but if you feel it is worth something to you, with Thanksgiving and Christmas quickly approaching , please consider donating your money to one of the local Phoenix food banks. Lets add a bit of cheer to those less fortunate than ourselves.

Thanks for sharing this. I haven't gone through it yet but I do appreciate the effort you put into it and your willingness to share it freely with others. I've been meaning to try out WingX and this may be the motivation I need to do so.

Thanks man! I get WingX free but I never use it cause it isn't as user friendly as Garmin Pilot. With this I may sit down and try to figure it out.

Couple of items.
1. Thank you for all the feedback and support - we are just short of 300 unique downloads of our guide - so obviously the WingX user base felt a need for it. Anyone who has donated to the food bank, thank you as well.

2. Apparently according to someone at WingX, they are working on soon to be released 500+ page user guide - I for one, will not be holding my breath on that.

Version 8.6.10 is out in the app store. The SynthVision looks much nicer.

A bit underwhelming of an update, especially since it was last September since we got an update. Was hoping the delay was vector maps :(

Version 1.3 of the guide is now published - which includes some of the new features introduced in version 8.6.10 of the WingX app.

Hope you find it useful.

Thanks, Tony!

Downloaded and safely ensconced in iBooks on my iPad. Will check it soon as a review and to see what new features I may have missed.

As an aside, my subscription was about due. I sent Hilton a copy of my recently reinstated CFI certificate, and in a day or two got a response with instructions on how to update my subscription to show an extra year. Worthy of note only because this is NOT the kind of thing I expect to go smoothly, so I'm pleasantly surprised when it does!

I switched from paper to Fore Flight two years ago. As the cheapest thing in the cockpit is the pilot, I started to search for a less expensive alternative to Fore Flight. I have had several pilots in the past say WingX is as good as Fore Flight and I wanted Stratux support. So, I decided to try WingX.

After downloading and starting WingX, the first big difference is the user interface. Trying to find the corresponding Fore Flight features takes a little time. I then found the tutorial from “FallenBrick” and downloaded it.

First, I would like to say “Thank You!” for writing the “Unofficial Pilot’s Guide to WingX”. All your time and effort is not going unnoticed. I found it most helpful in getting up to speed very quickly.

Second, from your format of one or two ideas per page and a lot of white space, I would guess you have done some tech writing or course writing in the past. Simple, easy to absorb concepts, and quick moving. Running the tutorial on the desk top and follow through on the iPad. Quick and easy!

What more can I say! Thank you!

Anyone going to OSH, curious if Hilton has any new features to demo there, can't go myself, have too many bills to pay

Apple have removed the app store from iTunes with the latest version. So now you cant import docs from the computer , for example waypoints

Version 1.5 of the guide is now posted - includes changes - DUAT to Leidos Flight services and VFR Free

What does the HUD view look like? Anything different from the AHRS view?

Only on the iPhone version obviously but it’s just a black screen with every data element in a mirror image format

HUDWay Glass, $50 on Amazon

I have to question it's use in full sunlight conditions.... Hilton even made a comment on facebook that "It is not readable in direct sunshine."

Apart of some minor cosmetic cleanup with this release, bit of a non event - still waiting for vaporware V9 - was there a demo or anything of V9 at SnF this year ?

"Improved obstacle handling" - whats that about ?

Please to announce that version 2 of the “Unofficial WingX guide” is now available FREE !

Finally, this version includes details of the Android version of WingX, we highlight both the differences and limitations between the two versions.
