who's hacked ?

Being somewhat lazy I couldn't remember Amazon's url. So I hit Google and enter Amazon. When I click on Google's link for Amazon up comes the Microsoft scam page from Russia. Warning your computer is blocked---blah blah.

I tried it twice with the same result. Entering Amazon directly--no scam page. Trying another Google link ---no scam page. Closing my browser and trying Google's Amazon link---no scam page.

I run both Malwarebytes and the Microsoft virus application and neither alerted.

So who was hacked?

When I search in google and hit the link they provide I get to Amazon just fine. No scam page.

Could be your DNS server pointing to the wrong page.
 
How do you know it was from Russia?

This whole potus Russia hacking craze sure smell a lot like the gops WMDs in Iraq story from back in the day.

From the .ru TLD in the URL? If it's the same one I've seen from time to time. Not with the consistency @pmanton seems to have, though.

Any chance the search engine is being redirected? Check your chrome search engine settings.

So if I hack you and have your computer send all your keystrokes to a .ca yahoo address, does that mean Canada hacked you?

No, but if the website with the flashing "you've been hacked, click here to fix it" has an .ca TLD, pretty good indication where the domain is registered.

And yes, of course anyone can register an .ru. Isn't that the whole idea of being friendly to scammers? And yes, it could be anything, but, so far, I haven't come across a whole lot is scam sites with a .uk or, since you mention it, a .ca.

And that means the perpetrator of that hack is the domains government and/or one of it's citizens??

I think it smells a whole lot like the stories of CIA involvement in drug trafficking to support "off-the-book" ops. It sounds a little crazy, but you know theres and element of truth to it.
 
Meh, I really don't see it, like the whole election thing, unless the also hacked HRCs and the DNC lizard brains and made them do all that sketchy stuff, it's just static.

Besides what makes more sense, the russian government trying to hack your computer to steal your porn and pictures of your family, or some broke kid trying to get a few bucks to buy a new play station.

Microsoft has a virus application? I'll be sure to stay away from that.

Malwarebytes is very good, but not a guarantee that you're clean. But first I'd look at your google URL and verify it's correct. https://www.google.com

Next if it is.. I'd be very suspect of your DNS. You can easily over ride that by adjusting your setting in either your network router or your computer. I like 'Opendns.com'
