Eggs fried in bacon grease...

Hey Grandpa, What's for Supper?

GRANDPA: Fried ‘taters with onions in the cast iron skillet, smoked sausage sliced and I over filled it, Cat-head biscuit made with buttermilk, with pure honey as good as honeysuckle silk, bacon baked beans and just turned out bread, sweet p'tater with butter and coffee dat's thicker than lead.

You do NOT sound like you are from Alaska! ;)

Forgot the liver.

Is there another way to cook eggs??? Never throw away bacon grease, it makes so many other things so much better . . . . . :p

Bacon is the ultimate additive. I was talking with a friend of mine who said he doesn't like dove meat. Told him that he hadn't had it the way I cook it. Add a slice of jalapeño, silver of cheese, wrapped in bacon, and then grilled over charcoal or open fire. His response was that you could do that to a dog turd, and it would be awesome. I was in no position to disagree.

Man, if everyone eats like this all the time then its no wonder a 4 place plane can only carry two people......:yesnod::lol::lol::lol:

(and I am guilty as well)

Does anyone else have the 1960s memory of a one pound Folgers coffee can full of bacon grease in the refrigerator?

I remember making a zillion attempts to flip two eggs in one smooth motion without breaking the yolks before I finally succeeded.

Had one burning question answered today; saw a bar of bacon-chocolate.

(Yes this is an amazing find and they are exceedingly rare - however out of the kindness of my heart I will send one to you...with prior payment.)

There's a you tube video on that. When you can land the slice of bread every time you're ready to try the eggs.

That said, I'm still chicken. I flip them over the sink. Don't want to clean the mess off the stove.

Yup grandma always saved the bacon grease, then added it to other foods. Of course she was a child of the depression and a young adult during WWII, so saving everything was well ingrained.

There were always two cans on the counter by the stove when I was growing up. One had bacon grease. The other was Crisco for when mom was either out of bacon grease or was cooking something that she didn't want to use bacon grease for. She turns 90 this year.

We only had bacon on weekends, and not every weekend, but it is one of the first things I remember learning how to cook. My mom didn't cook eggs or anything else in the grease, to my knowledge.

We are all greatly saddened to learn of your deprived childhood.

Started a summer job in high school many moons ago at a bakery. Owner was explaining things to me and there was a huge vat of Crisco. He says "don't get any of this on your pecker". I stand there. He says "know why", I say no. He says "'cause it's shortening".

That's what a lot of people say...

And even though I learned how to cook bacon as a kid, I can't say that I do it as an adult.

As usual, we balance. I did not learn how to cook bacon as a kid. I do cook bacon as an adult.

The only times I ever got bacon as a kid were when my Dad made bacon and tomato sandwiches, no lettuce, bread and miracle whip. Sorry Sac. No lettuce. LOL We were a cereal eating family for breakfast.

My great grandma would take the uneaten food from plates and combine them with leftovers. It drove my mom crazy.

Her family suffered terribly during the Depression, they were sharecroppers in Mississippi. My great uncles rode the rails, then they all joined the Navy when WWII came.

My Grandpa told me lots of stories of those days, he and his brothers would ride the freight into town and back (15mi each way), it was the only way to get there.

the first time I personally cooked bacon was in college. we went to my roommates house in jersey when his parents were away. I almost burned their house down. he looked at me and was like 'dude, do u know how to cook bacon or what?!?". I said "I guess not" lol.

but NOW I know!

so, I only recently found out that you can BAKE bacon. please enlighten me on this bacon grease thingamajiggy y'all are talking about. what do I do?
I've been baking bacon on parchment paper lately, works really nicely. Just tip the pan and strain the hot grease into a coffee can or whatever.

is parchment paper the same as 'wax' paper? I have some of that, but I think because it has 'paper' in the name I'm just afraid to put it in the oven.

No, it's not the same as wax paper.

I've been cooking breakfast for 40 at church for the last couple of years - we bake our bacon on parchment paper in the convection oven and it turns out well ... however, we really end up with pigsicle candy, not just bacon ... rub it down with brown sugar first and it's just about the most addictive thing I've eaten.

For our southwestern folks I do something similar with pork chorizo, cook it up, then cook the eggs in the leftover grease. So delish

The first time I cooked dinner for my girlfriend I did spinach salad with candied bacon on it. She was hooked.

Lard! Remember when food tasted great, not anymore, at least not in California. Even saying the word "Lard" in California will get you shunned more than if you said you think nicotine is wonderful.

Is bacon even legal in California?

Pinetop Perkins smoked for over 70 years before dying at 98. I still wouldn't recommend smoking.
