So with the FAA today allowing for testing for commercial civilian drone operators is there much of a career path?

Any ideas how might one pursue a career?

Google "Drone Services" in your city and you'll get your answer... The FAA just put their stamp on it... its been growing for years with waiver approvals... It's not new, just newly regulated...

Real estate drones, but soon everyone and their brother is going to be trying that, heck many already are.

I remember a POA job listing for a drone operator for a oil company, seem to recall it payed rather well.

Think being able to make a living off of a drone is going to be largely who you know.

The interview I had a year or so ago was with a company called Sky-Futures who wanted a PPL/drone experience minimum for training in London and something like 90k a year for their foothold in the US. I didn't have any oil/gas experience so I didn't make the cut but they were sounding like they would expand quickly.

I was nearly brought in for an interview in NY around the same time by a company called AeroCine (now Aerobo) for filming, news coverage, and other things for hire. I think they restructured recently and thats why an interview was never finalized.

Now that I notice, they appear to be hiring.

When I went through the interview process for both, i had mostly fixed wing time and a little cheap Syma X5C and they were hungry for people even with that.

in my field (Large Telecommunications company that starts with A and ends with T), Tower companies are starting to use them for tower and Antenna inspections. It's a growing field as more people figure out what they can do with it.

My tower guy tried to do that last summer. The thing took off, rolled over and smashed straight into the ground.

He disappeared to his truck with the thing and the controller and came back a few minutes later cussing about some firmware update that the iPhone had done that the flying part also needed, and we were out here in the boonies where he couldn't get enough of a data signal to download the update. LOL.
