So stupid me loses my cheap Jiffy hood that I had from private pilot days. Hated that thing anyways as it was PITA to take off and put on. I tried a bunch of different hood and foggle setups today at Marv Golden pilot store and ended up buying the ASA clip on hood setup. Works great and I can flip it up on my glasses when I fly VFR and then split second flip back down to fly IFR. Best of all, there is no need to have the instructor or safety pilot take the controls for me to do this. Its super comfortable as well and does a good job blocking the outside area from view so I can focus on instrument flying.

You might consider passing controls when putting the view limiting device on. It's not just the hand/head motion that is distracting but there's a bit of the instant visual change and you're more distracted in the process than you may realize.

I use foggles and I can put them on quickly with one hand (I wear clarity aloft headset) but I still have the safety pilot mind the controls when getting set up.

I have the overcasters as well. I also have a pair that came with the Cessna Private Pilot King package. Kinda frosted at the tops. They are not real comfortable with the headset I have. I much prefer the overcasters as I'm wearing sunglasses 90% of the time I fly.

I use a custom artisinal view limiting device...

$2.99 safety glasses from the home despot with customized vinyl tape. :D

You forgot "loving hand crafted by our old world craftspersons". :D

I've got ~8 hours in the ASA Overcasters I bought. I like them very well since I already wear glasses. They are much easier than the hood to put on and take off. They are lighter. They don't interfere with my headset. You do need to be careful with them since they can be squished into interesting shapes easily.

The only gripe I have is they're ~$20 for something that would be $2.99 if it wasn't exclusively for flying...

Yup I meant the ASA Overcasters. They clip right over my sunglasses and do the job. More comfortable than the crappy Jiffy hood.

Sadly I don't have pics. I did one in black tape (night) and one in white tape (for daytime usage). Maybe if I used organically raised free range plastic I could sell at ton of them to all of the hipster pilots ;-)

Funny you should mention "hipster". During my IR lesson today I said something about "going missed". My instructor insists that's a "hipster pilot term" and the official term that ATC wants to hear is "missed approach". He's portably right about the terminology, but he attributes it to "hipster pilot schools".

That instructor probably wouldn't like people who say "Ready for blast off" or "Ready to rock and roll" on takeoff. Or "No joy" / "Tally-ho" on traffic calls. :)

It's also nice his opinions are portable..I wish I could carry mine

My CFII is super anal about communication. He hates it when people say "with you" or "we'd like to taxi". Don't know why but I hear this all the time on the radio calls with other folks and ATC.

Actually, it's just "tally", not "tally-ho". At least that was how I was taught. But it was for use talking to a military facility. There's a good chance ATC won't even understand what you mean if you use it at with a civilian facility.

I really don't care what you say on the radio as long as you can get your point across in a concise and clear way. No Ummms Ahhs etc. People who freak out about the "with you" and "going missed" are making mountains out of molehills. It doesn't take that much more time, and gets the point across.

I've heard tally-ho over the radio, as in:

ATC: Bugsmasher 123X traffic is a Cessna 152, 12 O'clock 5 miles, report them in sight
Bugsmasher: Tally-ho.

ATC never said anything about it. And yeah..it's a old-phrase heh..

Sure, not every civilian controller is ignorant of military usage. I got away with it several times with Detroit Approach, but finally ran into a Flint controller who hadn't a clue what I meant.

And for all you know, the controller was secretly laughing at that pilot. :D

Most controllers would probably know tally-ho. Of course if you're talking official military terms, I'd say the "ho" has been eliminated.

Well this is the kinder gentler post Tail Hook military :D

Oh don't bring up the Tail Hook scandal. I had to go through the pain of never ending classes on sexual harassment after that.

When I was in the Army, I had a female platoon leader 1st LT who was a very sexy redhead. I kept waiting to be sexually harassed but it never happened. Damn that training.

Makes me recall the hilarious scene from the classic spy comedy Some Girls Do when the villain is training a female recruit and she keeps saying jerks and titty hoes instead of tally ho skip to 1:02:00 for the scene

I actually like the "lamp shade." I wear glasses and it was the easiest to use for me. The foggles don't sit well on my head with my glasses.
