MLG avionics

Hey Tom, I've seen more than a couple of the RV guys with VFR glass from MGL. You might ask the guys on the Vans Airforce forum.

MGL seems to be the less expensive alternative to Dynon.

It's a South African firm with offices in Torrance for US Distribution. I believe they are also affiliated with The Aircraft Factory Sling 2 (Light Sport) and Sling 4 (E-AB) aircraft. You may get some PIREPS by searching for Sling or The Aircraft Factory and MGL. And I know there's a few videos on YouTube of the Sling where you can see the MGL EFIS in action. Looks like it has synthetic vision as well.

As stated they are based in South Africa. There will be plenty to read about them on the vaf forum. I believe they (mgl) have their own forum on their website also.

I considered mgl when I replaced my efis but chose to go with grt. Back when I made my choice I read advise to look for what is currently working vs what has been announced. I am happy with my grt; it has performed well and is built with ifr redundancy in mind.

Does the Dynon Glass not have Autopilot built in? I'm a bit of a Garmin fanboy and plan on doing a G3X setup which have autopilot, just add the 2 servos.
 
When I was looking at a mini-EFIS, I looked at MGL Extreme. On the upside, it can control STX 165R. On the downside, needed external GPS antenna and the behind the panel depth was 4 inches -- barely enough against the lap tank. Although it fits a normal round hole, the head is offset up and to the right. What helped me decide against them is their love of membrane buttons.

I eventually decided to buy Sandia EFIS. It's quite expensive, but I liked their software. They may be the only one which can self-align the MEMS just using the gravity. Everyone else requires either a magnetometer or GPS. The manual of GRT's Ultra clearly states that in case of a loss of GPS signal, the attitude information goes away in 100 seconds. Fortunately or unfortunately, I crashed the airplane before I had a chance to actually buy it.

The Ultra is not a GRT product; it is an Avmap product. GRT's EFIS's do not require GPS assisting.
