Would you leave your current Job if you had a Job Offer for a FO position at a Major Airlines?

I really like my IT career, but there is a Always what if I had gone down a different path. Parents discouraged me to pursue a flying career and pushed me into the Military. I was a young didn't know any better just out of High school young man.

I think I would leave my IT career behind in a Heart Beat, but than again I really just like flying for fun. There are other thoughts of, I would be away from home alot. I'm home just about every night with an occasional travel that takes me away from home.

I'm fairly certain they can't match my salary, and Greg Bockleman would be REALLY ANNOYED to have to deal with me as his FO.
 
There's a podiatrist I know who did this, but I believe he's back in medical practice now.

When I started flying,my hope was to go to he airlines. Got a job offer in the fire service and never looked back.Did some part 135 flying part time. Now being retired I am still comfortable with my choice.
 
The question doesn't pertain to me, but put in reverse, there is no job* I can think of that would convince me to leave my current airline position.

*well, realistic job. Being a big time athlete, rock star, or celebrity might be fun. :)

You didn't mentioned being a dancer for The Thunder Down Under.
 
I've honestly never wanted to fly big jets so no, I wouldn't leave my job. I enjoy the responsibility of single pilot PIC and the fun and freedom of flying helos.

I can understand those that are drawn into that segment but it's just not for me.

I'm in decent shape, but not *that* good of shape!

121 is a really unique job. In all but the highest of seniority levels, there are going to be sacrifices that will either be acceptable or not to your personal situation. I love what I do, but one man's dream job is another man's nightmare.
 
Nope. Not a chance. I'd fly for free given the opportunity from what I see FO make. Not interested.
 
Ok lets forget about your holding a PPL only.

So who ever offered you the Job would pay for all your ratings up to ATP and any Type ratings needed for the Job requirements.
 
Sounds enticing but nah. Maybe if the package included a fat, retro-credited pension I might bite.

Yes, and in a way that is along the lines of what I'm doing right now.

I am leaving active duty at 16 years (giving up the AD retirement) in order to get my ATP and throw in with the airlines while hiring is still good. It will be a significant paycut (at least for a few years), but while I have enjoyed the Navy, at my level, the job satisfaction is not what it used to be. I always wanted to be a professional pilot and I'd like to pursue that now for as long as I can.

I've been told I'm crazy/certifiably nuts. I do own a Beech 18, so maybe there is some truth to those allegations....

10 years ago, yes. Today, probably not. Now that I have a family and a young child at home, I'm not really interested in being away from home for long periods of time.

A week here or there, maybe, but I'd miss too much.

Alas, that train has sailed...
 
Nope, for me I love flying too much. When I was doing it for work, it became a job. I lost all the passion for it. Now I instruct part time, fly for myself when I want. And I love it that way. Plus I get paid great money, have a pension and most important, job security.

I'm sure you realize that for the next 10-15 years they'll be hiring like crazy every year. That retirement and Tricare are nice to have. Hope it's your decision to leave and they're not forcing you out. Good luck.

This, exactly. I used to love writing, but then my work got really popular and won a few awards. I started getting more and more pressure to push out new material, to always be equally entertaining or breaking new ground, etc. For me, that just sucked all of the fun out and I stopped.

I don't want that to happen to my love for flying. I wouldn't mind eventually becoming an instructor on the side or something, but that's about it. Besides, like Tommy, I am very fulfilled at my current job... make a decent salary, have a pension, etc. Also, with two small kids, I would hate being away from home that much.
 
Not for an airliner job, but if it were for a position flying a business jet for a local company, absolutely. Hell, if the position was guaranteed and they were footing the IR-Comm'l I'd be signing up today, lol. I don't see that happening, especially at a wage that gets close enough to my current wage.

If I was in IT, I'd probably want to leave anyway.
And if I was offered a flying gig, I'd take it only if it involved flying rich people in their airplane, not airlines.

Got a few friends who already fly rich people in their own airplanes. Slowly trying to inch my foot into that door. ;)
 
I never had any desire to be a shuttle bus flyer but if I could replace my income with some sort of specialty flying career...in a heartbeat!
 
If I had a guaranteed position with a major providing I get all of my credentials I probably would even if it was a major pay cut. I however would not do it for 25k a year, you can't even live off that. That's what people who didn't get a GED make running a molding machine on our plant floor. That's just ridiculous.

But back to the topic at hand. No, I love my job and want to fly for fun. Most times when you try to turn a hobby into making a living at it you end up losing the enjoyment. That's what happened to me with IT, which isn't uncommon. Take a look at the people here who want to bail from their jobs. Most are in IT.

Im in the reverse as well as a working pilot.

Can't think of a single job I'd leave flying for, a few things I also dabble in on the side, but when I go to work it's not really work, on my days off I still fly my own stuff too.

Life is really short, do not live with regrets.
 
Keep moving along boys. Most of you couldn't handle the pay cut flying private jets ... and none of you could ever announce ATITPPA. :lol:

My wife to my surprised mention my Instructing during my retirement years. It depends if I can maintain a Class 2 medical.
