Where to mount GoPro (Cessna)

Be honest: for those of you who have used the suction mount in flight on the outside of the airplane, did worry of it possibly falling off distract you from your flying?

Why AGL?

I have flown with the suction mount on the belly of a Duchess doing 150 KTAS through Monument Valley and it stuck like glue. Also held through an approach and departure from Telluride. I was definitely above 12k pressure altitude, not sure what my max AGL was on that trip.

That would be AGL of the departure airport, not AGL of your current location. The pressure difference that makes the cup work is set at the airport when you lever it on. Then, for each 2000' you climb or so, you lose 1 psi of pressure on the outside, but the amount of air inside the cup stays the same.

Same here. Didn't think twice about it.

In my experience, IF it is going to fall off, it will fall off before you get in and start up the airplane. If it stays on long enough to do that, it is on for the long haul.

The only time I have had trouble with the suction mount holding is on rough surfaces: specifically on drab painted warbirds. The suction cup will attach and appear to hold strong and then after about 30 seconds to a minute it will simply drop off. I have never seen a problem staying on a smooth painted surface.

I go to track days with my Ducati 1098 and occasionally see a gpro littering the track.

Perhaps, but I have had it at least 6000' above the departure (attach point) elevation and it has not fallen off.

6000' is not a magical number. There is some altitude that it will fall off. Airspeed and configuration (camera, plane, and suction cup) both matter, too. Works for your use case, but short of a test to failure, you don't know how much margin you have left.

Not suggesting no one should do it. Just suggesting that you may not want to try it if you can't afford to lose the camera. (Although that probably applies to any external mounting.)

Guys there is an aircraft mount which cost only a fraction of the price. I think it is approx $20. Its design is way more simple so the chance of malfunction is minimum, however, still the materials used are high quality aluminum and rubber (to reduce shaking). It can be found on eBay and there is an youtube video with a footage from GoPro camera attached to Cessna with that mount :wink2:
