I can't get chat to work with any browser.

Thanks.

I think it's been down for quite some time. Not sure if it'll be back anytime soon.

I was in chat between Christmas and New Years...that is not quite some time. Thanks for killing a POA tradition. :nono:

Didn't even know there was a chat...

Or a SZ until the closing hubbub.

The link just seemed to disappear, how unfortunate.

The website management should poll the users to determine if the chat room should have been eliminated. Jason W (whoever you are), this is no way to manage the website! A real disappointment.

I haven't said that it will be eliminated. I said it'll be down. The software is so outdated that it won't run on the new server. I took the link down because it wasn't working.

OpenFire 4.0.0 was just released.

(Hahaha ducking... We are trying to fully eradicate that POS from our company, the sooner the better. Version 4 of a turd is still a turd.) ;)

Jason,

What's different just out of curiosity?

Ubuntu 14.04 instead of Centos 5. Nginx instead of Apache. Some of the custom integrations that were written broke when we moved to the new server.

We're talking about a number of things amongst the MC. Chat being one of them. Cost is an issue. One complaint of the last system is that it was flash based (so people on iOS couldn't use it).

Don't count it out yet.

By the way, for those that are wondering. It wasn't a heavily used feature of the site.

Here is a breakdown of usage over the last four full months.

Code:
Users:
SEPTEMBER: 17
OCTOBER: 17
NOVEMBER: 8
DECEMBER: 14

Posts:
SEPTEMBER: 1293
OCTOBER: 531
NOVEMBER: 439
DECEMBER: 1302

Users is the total number of unique users that posted a message in the chat room. Posts is the total number of unique posts made by those users. As you can see...it pales in comparison to the usage of the main board itself.

That said, we know that it was important to some people. I want to assure those people that no decisions have been finalized as to the future of chat. The old server was beginning to act funny and I wanted to move the site before we had problems on our hands. The site itself comes before any single feature. I didn't want chat to hold up the migration.

If you're nice, they'll refund your subscription fees.

I got lost after Ubuntu. Will Google. :)

David

Edited to add: Ok, understand now. Beyond my need to know. :)

So you're about as interested as the folks who sat through our "post-mortem" meeting about a server that self-destructed yesterday during an upgrade when the insertion of a kernel model made by a third party vendor into the running kernel for backups, kernel paniced the machine because of a mismatched set of C libraries to kernel, and triggered a 13 hour ordeal to rebuild the entire system from the ground up?

:)

The best part was talking to a guy in India for a half hour waiting for him run a single command line (tar up /etc on the old machine and place it in /tmp with wide open permissions so we can grab a copy of it) about how he wanted to know if I was a vegetarian and that if I wasn't that I should eat "sea crab soup" for my cold? He made sure to tell me he was, "very good at Linux!"

Great chief. Is the file done yet? It's 1AM. I'd like to finish this up and go home sometime before the sun comes up. Thanks.

Oh fun. Fortunately never had an experience quite that bad.

We have a vendor for an atmospheric data display system that decided to statically link against a version of libc without telling me that didn't play nice with a couple of kernel versions leading to either a memory leak from hell or a panic every couple of days... that was fun! Fortunately it'd only happen on some of the nodes that automatically generated products, so we'd just wind up at reduced capacity if I didn't react quick enough. It wasn't supposed to be happening long enough to make automated recovery a priority for me, but it sure did.

It's too bad, I used to be on there a fair amount. But it was down a while, and no one logged in anymore, until Jesse mentioned it...

It is cool, but not being accessible via tablets, etc really is going to limit the people.

And I was on here a long time before I found the link as well :)

I do miss it.

Intent is to get a new chat system, one which will work on more platforms...

But slack is filtered at work!

Get your IT to start using it. Solved. ;)

(That or we need to teach you the finer points of SSH or SSL VPN tunnels. Are they doing man in the middle decryption of port 443? ;) Most aren't.)

We have enough chat solutions already lol. And I can run my own tunnels/proxies, but I'm lazy. We don't MITM HTTPS yet, but SSH via proxy (not an SSH proxy, mind you) is permitted. I used to own our perimeter security devices, but lost them to the enterprise overlords years ago.

Chat needed flash. Gone to an android tablet and phone. No flash, no chat. Didn't really miss it since I hardly ever use the "lotus" chat at work though many depend on it. Interpersonal skills and personal interaction out the window. Decay in our society directly linked to nonvisual communications.

I could never get chat to work anyway, even when it was supposedly working - Google Chrome user.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I got to thinking about POA Chat. Any updates on whether or not it will return?
