Cirrus for a student pilot?!

Im a student pilot who recently soloed. My dad found out about the plane not to be named. (I call it the C word) He wants to buy one when I get my PPL. Hes completely sold on the parachute because it will make us "invincible" then he went on to spout numerous non aviation newstorys citing that it "saved" so many people. I quickly came back on a much more conservative approach stating that if he were to buy a plane for my use I want a piper warrior because that is what Im training in and comfortable in.

I also told him that I would rather fly the plane in an emergency than rip the chute and trust the wind gods to guide me away from power lines.

Also Im not a big fan of the way they look.

Any suggestions to get my dad off the cirrus idea?
 
So your going to buy a Cessna 172 with a chute.
 
WTF is wrong with a Cirrus? Especially one that someone else is going to buy for you. You don't HAVE to pull the chute if you prefer to fly it to the scene of the accident.

I know a lot of people that bought the type plane they trained in, but soon get bored with it. There is a reason that it is a trainer.

I just have a weird feeling about cirrus. I like my control yoke right in front of me and I also dont like the "Preppy" reputaion cirrus has. I really dont want people to think Im flying around on daddys dime. (Even though I am:redface:)

Also I told him a saratoga would fit our needs much more for much less.
 
Does your dad have his certificate? I'm guessing no.

You just soloed. I'd worry about finishing that, and then getting your instrument rating. Then, worry about buying a Cirrus or Saratoga. Your dad is putting the cart before the horse:)
 
I'm Cirrus Training Center instructor and we regularly get students flying the SR20s. We just soloed 3 in the past week. Heck, I'm training a 15 year old kid in an SR22.
 
Lucky! Your dad wants to buy you a plane, my parents don't really care about my flight lessons

You just soloed. I'd worry about finishing that, and then getting your instrument rating. Then, worry about buying a Cirrus or Saratoga.

Thats the way I feel honestly. I just want to concentrate on my training and making sure Im a safe pilot. And no he is not a pilot but has talked about starting training.

The bolded part is a logical statement.

Have you ever flown a plane with a side sitck? After a few minutes it becomes second nature and you don't have to deal with the yolk getting in your way.

I'm not pushing Cirrus. I love my Bonanza. But I have flown in a Cirrus, and I was very impressed.

Don't let your dad push you into something you don't want to do especially when it comes to your pilot training. If you're comfortable training in the warrior, then firmly let him know that you're going to stay with that airplane for a while.

Im sure cirruses are fine planes but its not what I want. Im very thankful for my parents in supporting my interest in aviation and for financing it and I tell them time I fly how thankful I am. I just want to make sure I get a plane that fits me.
 
Sheesh....if dad is buying....up sell him to a PC-12. The ride and view is so much better.
 
Many flight schools use SR20s so they certainly can be good for students and low time pilots. However, they are really overkill for primary training, heck so is a G1000 172 for that matter. I'd say wrap up your training in the Warrior and fly some different planes with your dad and then evaluate what would fit your mission best, Cirrus or otherwise.
 
Agreed, and since he's past solo with the Warrior, it's going to be a step backwards to suddenly jump into a Cirrus. He might as well start over from zero, and then some.

And has a very deep pocket. Cirri aren't cheap and insurance on a low time pilot is gonna be pricey as well.

Stay with the Cessna and Piper for now. Go with the Cirrus later.

And yoke/stick placement isn't a factor. Your hand is in the same general spot on both.

No we bought it to live in it. Dad said "Oh it will only be for a month or two"
We live on 30acres that we bought.
here we are half a year later and only the piers on our home are poured.

Our project this year is to finish the house and keep working on the land

I trained in a warrior. Damn good plane. But I like an sr20 better. It's a cool plane. I don't think it's preppy or ostentatious. It's just engineering that isn't 70 years old.

I really like the cirrus. It has composite, less parasitic drag, 28g fuselage(my buddy was almost killed in a power off landing when winds shifted in an aluminum luscumbe) aerodynamic design, more ergonomic interior design.

The chute is a gimmick until you need it. Imagine losing an engine in IMC with 500' ceilings at 2000'. I think I would pull the chute.

The side stick is really no different than a yoke. It's just half a yoke, and your passenger can actually watch an iPad movie or read a book. The side stick is really half a yoke with a darn good arm rest. Have you ever actually touched the right side of your yoke in left seat?

Pretty airplane BTW. Father and son aviation is also cool. It's even better when you have your own and then just use your dads for cheap like I do haha.

I have my eye on a grumman tiger :)

Dad doesn't pay attention to those stats.
For him, it is just 1 more option.
I think he really prefers the chute being there when I'm flying the kids.
 
Personally I just like Pipers more specifically the Saratoga because of the
useful load and club seating. I plan to transition to complex/highproformance when im done with my PPL and the fact that the saratoga is similar to the warrior. I really want my dad to get into flying but he is so sold on that one feature.

He is really interested in getting started though and I really want him to start. I know for sure he would love it as much as I do.

Flying with my dad is something I will always be glad we got to do together.
 
Have him set aside some of those 30 acres for your own runway.

:no: Hes already talked about that but personally I would rather drive the 15 minutes to the airport than clear cut our land.
 
Must be nice, I'm lucky my parents support my aviation hobby but I have to pay to buy the aircraft.

I got my PPL in a Piper just a year ago. I got bored of it pretty quickly to be honest, I feel like when you hit 100 hours you want something faster and sexier. Saratogas are cool. Try going for a demo flight in a Cirrus! I'm doing that next week and am excited about it.
 
Was that the definitive conclusion they reached? Seems like a lot of time passed between the Blackhawk taking off and the airplane coming in. I don't know how much time is required for the wash to dissipate though.
