Another member here posted in another thread that this 50's Cafe opened up in Cameron just walking distance from T35.

Weather has cleared up now (for a few days) so how about we have a PoA fly-out/fly-in?
They are open on week nights, until 9pm which is plenty for a fly-in dinner, I think.
On Sundays, they close at 2pm. But otherwise it seems that have great hours.

A 3200-ft rwy is plenty for regular GA planes and even many fast-movers.

Who's in?

EDIT: Found their webpage: http://www.50scafe.com

We fly in there occasionally and walk down the street for Mexican food. This will be a good addition. I'm just over at T74, so it's a very short flight for me!

Now that we've hired a new gal, there's hope for us flying in daylight hours again soon!

Today is Day One for her, though, so it will be next week before we can leave her unattended. Can you wait a week?

Jack, I might have seen your "high wing Cessna or 747" (end of news-media lingo) at T74. I go there pretty often, whether for food or fuel.

Jay, glad y'all got a new girl. Is she as pretty as the current one? Oh wait, what? That's your daughter we're talking about? Um, I ain't said nuttin'. :D

Unless somebody wants to fly there asap, as in tonight, tomorrow or Wed, the weather will move in and this weekend forecast looks pretty gloomy, with the cold front and all so it might be a week before we can go there.
Next week should be gorgeous, then more clouds and rain for the weekend ... and ... dang ... the story repeats for other November weekends in the extended forecast. :(

Still, let's keep the destination in mind, I am sure I will. Haven't had a $100 burger in a while!

I'm out there a lot. If you see me out or my hangar open, stop by. My hangar faces the highway and this is my plane.

I'll do it as soon as I can get the wife off my ass. We're buying a 'new' old house we're moving to. We close tomorrow.

I am not looking forward to the next coming weeks having to move, paint, repair, and do a hundred things that go along with all that.

It's cheaper to keep her.

TXFlyer, no worries, no rush. And I am sure we'll go out there a few times.
Jack, how do you keep pilots' drool off the plane? Or is it beneficial to the polishing process? :) I believe I saw your plane. Not by your hangar but in the air. Blinded me for a week. :D

So how's a week from tomorrow (Nov 10th) work for y'all for llunch? Or is this a dinner thang?

It does get a lot of attention. Then when most pilots figure out they can't go over 100mph or they can't stuff their autopilot in they back away! An airplane you have to fly yourself??? Yikes!

For those that haven't been to Cameron, it's a good example of a small town that cares about their airport. A few years ago it was mostly crop dusters. Now they've repaved the runway, built a new terminal, new fuel pumps, and most recently some T-Hangars! I taught my friend how to fly in his Luscombe 8A. The first time I took him to Cameron, he said, "You land it!" I told him no, he had to land it, just focus on the center stripe and keep the nose straight, which he did. Something about a 50' wide runway when you've been landing on 100' wide runways!

Weekdays lunch are tough for me, but I might be able to make it.

Dinner is easier and the wife would likely come along.

Let me know!

Lou? Tuesday work?

Negative, sir, I will be out of town most of next week. And since I have a day-job, I cannot do weekday lunches either.
I could do a weekday dinner or weekend lunch after the 13th. (though that weekend looks rainy too)

But y'all go ahead without me if you can get a group together, I'll join the next fly-in.

"Day job"? What is this "day job" of which you speak? ;)

I haven't had a regular job since 1996. lol

Well, what day works best for you? We can swing a Sunday late lunch -- how late are they open on Sundays?

That would work better for us as well.

Looks like 11:00 - 2:00 on Sunday.

11:00 - 9:00 other days.

Argh. That eliminates Sunday for us. Why bother being open for just 3 hours?

Looks like you guys best go on without us. In another few weeks we should have our new gal trained to the point where we can get out at more regular times.

Meanwhile, we will head that way next Tuesday, for a late lunch. I will post a PIREP for y'all.

The wife and I flew out to Cameron for dinner tonight. It's only about a 20 minute flight for us, and she wanted to go, so who am I to say no :)

Really nice little diner. Talked with the owner for quite a while, and she was quite excited to know that pilots are interested in coming in to eat. They have only been open about two weeks, so still getting things figured out, but the food was very good, and super friendly, burgers, onion rings, etc. And Blue Bell Ice Cream in more flavors than I've seen in months. They apparently are driving to Brenham to get it right now.

They also said they would be happy to pick folks up at the airport if they want a ride, but it was only a five or so minute walk. Take a left out of the airport and look for the big star.

Hey Jay, did I invite you to our Austin Pilots Group on Facebook yet? We took 3 planes down to KRAS on Saturday and flew around for a bit.

I'm going to be putting a bunch of local flying trips together for our group and you should join us. Lou can't join, because he's a FB protester.

edit: Nevermind, you're ignoring my friend request.. :nono: Well so much for walking around with you at HYI to get you O2. I thought we were pals! :dunno:

:wink2:

Shane, don't rely on FB as the only communication medium.
You know you have my phone number, right? You take the digits, one by one, and type them into your mobile FecesBooking device and either make a phone call (yes, it is not a myth, it does work!! ) or send a text message. ;)

I'll be out flying tonight, you going somewhere?

And Dan, thank you for the PIREP!

(lol! PM me your real name. My Facebook policy is simple: If I can't pick you out of a police line up, I ain't your "friend". ;))

Mary and I would love to join the group! We have tried to get fly outs organized down here, but our work schedule ain't conducive to it.

Hello? What no love?

lol Interesting! For whatever reason your signature (with your name) doesn't show up in Tapatalk without a little fishing.

See you on FB! :)

Mary and I are gonna try to fly here tomorrow (Tuesday) for lunch. Should land about 12:30 - 1, if anyone wants to join us?

I'm not doing something special just for you because you think you're important enough to be spied on. :wink2: For just some little fun stuff for you and I, sure. But otherwise, it's Austin Pilots Group posting pal. Get on the train.

For those of you who haven't been to Cameron, I want to tell you about a cool airport. This airport was nothing more than an old hangar with no doors and 4 old airplanes stuffed into it. You'd occasionally see a cropduster or two tied down on the ramp.

The City listened to the needs of the local pilots and have built a simple, but nice terminal, added fuel, and about 8 new T-Hangars at competitive prices. Gotta love a small town that wants to help their airport grow. Too bad it's an hour drive for me to get there!

Doesn't look like much from the outside.

So we flew up to Cameron (T35) today for lunch. It was a bit scuddy, for Texas, and we never got above 3000', but the tailwind pushing us along at 188 knots made it fun! We were there in a smidge over an hour.

Cameron is a nice little airport. As the previous poster showed, the terminal is nice, clean, and handy. The fuel farm is brand new and the gas is very expensive, but we topped off anyway to show our support for the airport.

There was no one at the airport, but, hey, it was Tuesday. We walked out the back door, hung a left, and made it to the 50s Diner in about 10 minutes. It's an easy, 6 block stroll.

We got there right at the end of the lunch rush, about 1:15 PM and of course had to pose with the sign:

We were waited on instantly, and ordered our food. The menu is pretty extensive, with several "specials of the day" that sounded great, but we wanted to keep it simple for our first visit, ordering the honest "$100 Hamburgers". We then met Margy, the owner, who kindly posed with Mary for a picture:

Margy is an interesting gal, the wife of the county judge. She's owned gift shops and jewelry stores, but this is her first restaurant. She introduced us to the cook (whom she called "the reason everyone eats here"), a big bear of a man who clearly knows his way around a kitchen. They've been open just 3 weeks, but have already attracted a loyal following.

And I know why! The food was AWESOME. Here are some pix:

The shakes (one chocolate, one butter pecan) were amazing:

The burgers were made from fresh, never frozen beef, and the buns were as good as I've had anywhere. And yes, that IS a fried egg on my burger!

Did someone say onion rings? To die for...

All in all, just a great place to fly into. Great food, service, prices, and nice people! We will be back!

Our plane looked lonely on the ramp. Y'all need to come to Cameron!

Thanks for the post Jay. I will put this on my list of places to stop!!!
Wish the airport had an IFR approach.

I was surprised to hear you say this, but it's true! We used to fly into Cameron just to get their cheap fuel. I'm based at nearby T74 and it's $3.50 right now and we get people flying in just for fuel. Cameron is $4.82! I'm wondering if it will drop when they get their next truck.

Thanks for the review. I'll be heading over there on a weekend in the near future.

That looks like a good burger... I might have to make my way over there now. Damn you! It doesn't look low cal, that meal. :D
