Best / Worst Aviation movie

I hate CGI...just hate it.

I notice a lot of movies with heavy CGI look good in the theater on the big screen but look terribly fake on the smaller screens at home. Not sure why that is.

This. The last Indiana Jones movie was ruined by CGI.

And aging characters.

And a bad plot.
It started earlier than that with the Temple of Doom. The CGI Tri-Motor crash in the Himalayas was most pathetic.

Couple of other movies that haven't been mentioned:

Cloud Dancer - Really bad script, but heavy EAA type involvement and some ground breaking filmography of the aerobatics. On YouTube.

Dawn Flight - For just incredible flying, you have to watch this short film. All done live, no special effects, in Schweizer 1-26 sailplanes in California. YouTube has a poor copy of it and you can still buy one from the people who made it.

Firefox? The ice cap refueling scene was filmed in Northern Montana at the old Glasglow AF base - isolated is the word!

When I saw "Always" in the theater and the dead stick landing of he '26 I was lifting my feet to clear the trees coming up in the windshield! And it has an Aeronca Champ in it!

Make sure the TV you're watching doesn't have the horrendous "Soap Opera" mode enabled, aka "image smoothing" or whatever patented buzz word the manufacturer uses. It's the TV's way of adding frames for the new 60+ MHz TVs and it looks terrible in 99% of cases, especially with special effects scenes in movies.

I was waiting for Always to be mentioned. I haven't watched it in a long time, but I remember it being a good movie with some fun aviation.

I'll throw my hat into the CGI ring with a "bad CGI is bad; good CGI can be amazing; most of it is poorly done" nod.

Nah, I don't have a TV per se. I have a projector.
I have an optoma HD20 (which is becoming outdated) but nice 1080P picture.
No fancy bells and whistles.

I agree I hate that soap Opera looking crap I see on display TVs in stores.
Makes movies look like plays.

None of the rotor crowd has mentioned the truly awful but comical, Blue Thunder, yet?

Dawn Flight is great. Watched my dvd of it again the other day. Probably the only aviation movie ever nominated for an Oscar(best short action film.)

I sat down in my office this morning to catch up on some work. I turned on the tv and this was on TMC:

I don't know what possessed them to pull this out of the vault, but it was so bad I could not look away. It was like a claymation movie.

Wings (1927) won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

I was always partial to "A Gathering of Eagles." Great story of old SAC in the 60s. Lots of great KC-135 & B-52 footage.

What I cant believe is people watching movies at OSH. I could never sit through a movie during the Big Show. Too many parties!

Silent rotor and Turbo boost.....that movie was AWESOME!!!

Guess in our modern day composite mindset....silent rotor and turbo boost was scrapped for higher gross weight capabilities!!! :D

Recent and really bad - Flight with Denzel Washington. More legal drama than flying movie, but even the flying part was pretty much garbage.

I am going to watch this on netflix but if anyone sees it in my queue I am going to deny it was me that watched it.
Hmm, I think I might do so too.

I actually liked it.

This is like me trying to pick a best and worst cop movie. Theyre all pretty terrible!

But Airplane and 1941 are great!

I thought it was a decent movie so long as you granted the producers their artistic and dramatic license slack.

I loved Iron Eagle as a kid, I have it on DVD.

I loved Top Gun, Turbulance, and even Executive Decision. There was a movie from the 90's that I saw and was totally unbelieveable called Final Descent. I had to look up the title. After mid-air with a small plane the elevator got jammed nose up on this airliner, so they kept climbing and had to figure out what to do. What they do is pretty unrealistic (that's an understatement), so if you are one of those who can't suspend your aviation knowledge, don't bother watching, you'll hate it.

As for worst: none. I love all aviation movies, don't care how real or fake they are.

I think too many people (especially pilots) are getting hung up on the reality factor in aviation movies to enjoy them. I recently read a review of the Denzel Washington movie "Flight". It was written by a airline pilot ("a captian"... lets all bow). He said that the movie lost in the opening few minutes when Denzel (who was the captain) did the pre-flight walk-around. His statement was something like "a captain would never do a walk-around, much less in rain". Who cares, get the stick out of your ass cappy!

When watching an aviation movie, I don't expect to see everything being exactly accurate, that would be more like a documentary than fiction. I watch it for the entertainment value, not accuracy to real-world aviation.

If who does the walk-around were the only thing they got wrong, that would be pretty darn good!

So much they have permanent TFRs over their facilities. ;)

Ah yes, the "permanent temporary flight restriction"!

I wonder why the planes in the movie didn't say anything about it?

"Airplane!" was one of the reasons I wanted to be a pilot, oddly enough.

Best: Three way tie between Battle of Britain, Strategic Air Command, and Flight of the Navigator

Worst: Stealth (except for Jessica Biel's hotness)

Best: The first five minutes of Top Gun
Worst: The rest of Top Gun

Nauga,
spinning out to sea

It is a well known fact here that I hate top gun, but some of the flying scenes while unrealistic are cool. More bad lines in that movie than you can shake a stick at. "Spinning out to sea" is just the tip of the iceberg! :D

Did I miss any mention of Tora Tora Tora! and/or Midway? Classics. Honorable mention to Tuskeegee Airmen.

My worsts would have to be Red Tails and Pearl Harbor.

Best Movies are the Disney Planes IMHO:

Absolute worst would be Soul Plane:

:yes::thumbsup:

Does APOLLO 13 qualify?

How about The Right Stuff?

I just about wanted to pee my own flight suit after that first Mercury launch scene.

For those guys who liked Airplane! (which does include me), I nominate Zero Hour! for the worst aviation film. You have to see this thing to believe it. And the worst part is that many of the scenes were copied word for word in Airplane!, except the original was serious!

My Dad bought the DVD at Walmart today. Tricked me into watching it. Gotta be up there for worst aviation movie ever. Just read the comments. :D

12 O’Clock High (The only relief in several boring leadership classes) is great at one end of the spectrum as is Airplane great for completely different reasons.

Hard choice between Battle of Britain and 12 O’Clock.

Cheers
