Dear members of Pilots of America,

Apologies if you consider this inappropriate for this forum. We are currently conducting a research study at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Oxford where we want to analyse the awareness and opinions of the aviation community regarding security issues in several air traffic control protocols.

We are looking for the opinions of pilots, controllers, engineers, regulators and other stakeholders. For our research, we are interested in security aspects of common communication technologies to help improve the next generation of these technologies. We would thus be very grateful if you could take a short amount of time to support our study.

Please note that this study is fully anonymous and no identifying data will be collected. During the study you will be asked to answer a number of questions in an online survey. Some of these questions will be simple multiple-choice others will ask for assessments of air traffic scenarios provided. Overall, this will take about 10-20 minutes.

If you want to take part in the study or are simply looking for more information, please visit this link:

Best regards,
Martin

Well that survey isn't leading the answers in any way at all...

Some of the questions are unanswereable. For example, the answer to, "What is the effect if all data is missing from an air traffic control radar screen system (briefly, for example 10 minutes)?" depends on a lot of factors. Whose screen is it? What type of facility? Is more than on screen or more than one facility affected? What time of day? What's the location? What's the cause of the failure? What meteorological conditions?

The answer could range from "nothing" to "catastrophe." But likely closer to "nothing" for most likely conditions.

I tried to take the survey and gave up because my answers were all, "it depends". I would suggest if you really want to gather good data that you enlist some pilots to help you design the survey questions. No offense, but it currently reads like a computer science department made this up in a vacuum.

I would concur, the survey design needs a lot of help. Most of the questions are simply unanswerable as they are currently written. I wouldn't place much faith in whatever "results" come out of this.

Don't work in aviation, survey questions are for those employed in the system, the way they're worded.

Don't put any faith in any "results" from a self selected sample.

Oxford has some fabulous science departments. Contact one of them for some help in designing a survey competently.

I guess the design of utterly useless aviation "surveys" isn't limited to ERAU.

+1000 !
Too many academics and not enough from the troops in the field. Get some ACTUAL pilots and controllers to help you construct meaningful questions so you can collect meaningful data !
