Snorting his way across the USA
I was thinking about picking one of these up. I was looking at the all stainless Nitron finished model but it doesn't seem to be a current offering, plus I was looking at getting a 10mm.

Any thoughts?

I dont think they make a 10mm 226.

They make a 220 in 10mm.

Yeah, you want a heavy load in the 226 I think you're limited to .40 S&W, but at that, I think it's as good a choice as any high quality side arm. Nice thing is you can convert it to .22LR for cheap plinking.

I don't get the full sized handgun thing. Big and dopey. Only paranoid wackjobs and cops carry full sized pistols.

226 is a really nice pistol, if I was going to carry daily that would be it.

FYI get the 40, if you look at the ballistics and capacity it's hard to beat, plus you can get the 357sig "kit" for it if you need to cut through more. But a 40 +P+ JHP is probably going to be more than sufficient for most anything you'll have to deal with in the lower states, just be sure you spend some time shooting those defense loads at the range to get used to shooting the hotter stuff.

Sig has a refurb line too, saves money and is as good as new.

The P226 used to be a very fine handgun. They have since changed manufactoring locations and I dont think they are the quality they used to be. It is an extremely accurate, solid handgun even though it is an old design. There have been some problems with the finish rubbing off with extreme holster wear and Sig offered a special coating to help with this issue.

If you want to stick with Sig, look at the 229/228. Its a smaller version of the 226. I have owned and carried all three and never had any issues. The 226 is difficult to conceal in summer attire and its not the most comftorable to wear.

Just my 2 cents....

I've owned my P226R (in .40) for almost 10 years, and it's still one of my favorite handguns. As James mentioned, the .357 kit is really cool as well and gives you a lot of flexibility. My only recommendation would be to find a place to go shoot one - it has a big grip, which fits my bigger hands perfectly, but some find to be a little large.

I also have a Glock 20 for 10mm, and while 10mm is a lot of fun to shoot, I don't find the feel of my Glock to be nearly as nice as my Sig. It's not a fair comparison, though - they're very different guns.

One of the best weapons I've ever owned. It was my duty weapon in the late 90's and it's been with me ever since.

If I was to trade it for a newer one, it would be the Mk25 Tactical.

I have a Sig P226 Equinox. Nice gun. Do I like it better than my other 40 S&W handguns? Not particularly. It's pretty. It fits my hand nicely. Is it better than a Glock or Baretta? Personal choice. I like them all.

I had a complete brain fart - I meant .40, not 10 mm. But yeah, I don't plan on carrying it, I just plan on using it for home defense and range time. I have a few pistols in the toolbox but mostly shoot a Colt Series 70 .45 ACP and a couple of S&W model 39's, which I used to shoot in IPSC competition years ago. Although I like the 39, I'd like something a little hotter than 9mm, and a little higher capacity.

I've shot Glocks and I like the way they shoot but I really like SA/DA pistols better.

Even the FBI doesn't believe that 40 S&W business anymore. They're going back to the 9mm. All of that is assuming you're using them on human targets. Big game in the wild, I think I'd want significantly larger than 40. 10mm, 44mag, something higher power than 40 for sure.

Fullsize handgun is much more enjoyable to shoot at the range than a subcompact. Target shooting, competition shooting, open carry, all good uses for a duty size gun.

Well, then, sounds like you made up your mind. If you focus on DA/SA, P226 is an excellent choice.

Plus after you run out of ammo they're better for bashing in zombie skulls.

I think the best thing for that would be a contraband PYa (it's under sanctions). Steel frame, baby.

Could always get a SV Infinity :wink2:

That looks like a nice piece of work. That's gotta be over a grand if not two.

Good for the open carry guys, but c'mon open carry is 1A speech not 2A usefulness. And if you are going to go open carry might as well carry an AK or something. Bigger statement and a little more firepower since you are giving up tactical discretion.

You might drop over to SigForum.com. Lots of good info there.

I've got a P229 with both .40 S&W and .357 SIG barrels. I play around with both calibers. The 229 was one of the nicest feeling in my hand automatics I've picked up over the years.

As for shooting big game, you can always get a S&W .500. They used to use it for hunt buffalo with...up close.

When I open carry (I usually only open carry when touring on motorcycle), I open carry my Glock 21 in a Blackhawk level 3 duty holster. Otherwise, it's the little XD-9 sub concealed.

I always thought the open carry movement was funny. I don't really disagree with being able to open carry, I'm actually in favor of it, but the way they are going about delivering their message is counterproductive because they come off as just that, nut jobs, and that screws it for everyone.

If you can carry a pistol to serve your needs, you can simply just abide by the standards of concealed carry. The majority of this visible stuff is in Texas, so unless they are convicted felons, they can carry concealed and no one will say a word. Hell, you can carry concealed in Manhattan and no one will say a word. Why press the issue into open carry so quickly? :dunno: Let society adapt to the realities of concealed carry society, and open carry will happen on its own.

As for a rifle, in TX I have walked down the street with one slung and the cop waved at me as he drove by.:dunno:

When I lived in Arizona, I'd open carry my PT92. It's not too big, not too cumbersome when you are out hiking. But yes, what you say is true, if you really need the open carry for safety, you better be slinging an AK47 variant.

SW Chief's Special in 38 with Hydrashoks.
No hammer to catch in the jacket pocket
No slide to get jammed - just squeeze again
The one gun fight of your life will be over in 5 to7 seconds with 2 to 3 shots at a distance under 12 feet.
By the time you draw your glittering, engraved custom showpiece with all the go-fast mods for making reloads, take a shooting stance, and scream "Stop I've got a gun" I will have already tipped up the worn 38 in my pocket, popped him twice without saying a word, and be walking away as though nothing happened when the bystanders start looking around to see what that noise was.
BTW, if you let him get inside 5 feet it is more likely you will die than he will die - especially if you are now trying to pull that shiny gun out from under your shirt

The only time I ever pulled my gun in public was in a mall and a crowd of young blacks (mostly) began fighting, smashing windows and grabbing merchandise. Down the way someone started shooting. I pulled the 38, put my finger through the trigger guard then grasped the gun around the cylinder, not the butt. This way only the tip of the stubby muzzle and the bottom of the butt was visible outside of my hand. Walking along with my arm relaxed and my hand down at my side only experienced police or military would have noticed the gun. As it was the gun fight went out the other end of the mall and I simply walked to my car and left.
Yeah, it was all over the news here in Michigan - but I wasn't. Just the way I want it.

I bet you practice that move in the mirror dontcha

My 226 wouldn't be my first choice to carry concealed. :)

That gun is legal in the people's republic of Kalifornistan?

MA has a similar approved handguns only scheme one of the work-around is law enforcement officers can buy any handgun they want then legally resell it. Some of them make a few bucks buying and reselling non approved handguns. Yeah Murica.

I always thought .25s made great pocket pistols. At pocket pistol range 5-15', even the cheapest .25 will shoot someone in the face. A double tap to the face drops anyone whether you kill them or not.

I like the p226 and just about all other sigs too. The P220 in 45acp being my favorite sig.

They are big for CCW however.

My daily CCW gun is a Glock 42 in 380. I just picked up a Glock 43 yesterday in 9mm which will be my new daily CCW pocket gun once I've run a couple hundred rounds and some gold dots through it.

A nice alternative to the P226 is the CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical. All metal construction like the Sig and, in my humble opinion, is much more comfortable to shoot. If you have some extra coins lying around, get one from this outfit with the the pro-package upgrade:

I'm pretty sure if it's not on the roster of safe guns you cannot bring into the state.. I also think they did away with the single shot exemption to off roster guns

The nicest shooting pistol I've had was a Sphynx, a Swiss license of the CZ-75. The trigger on it was nothing shy of superbly smooth. The only issue I had with it was a propensity to stove pipe.:( I don't know if that's inherent in the CZ-75 design or the Sphinx manufacture.:dunno: It might have been peculiar to the .40S&W chambering as well.
