PoA Glide-a-Thon!

Hmmm, maybe I'll get one last chance to give the KNS 80 in N3327M a workout.

Tony, are there any VOR/DME RNAV approaches down near you?

not that I know of. of course ive never flown or taught in anything with an operational VOR/DME RNAV so ive never paid much attention. Ames does have a VOR/DME, but not RNAV. Shouldn't Joe's fancypantsy IAP finder sort for that or something?

hehehe.. I might get to file IFR from Boone to Ames for the event. :D (For those that don't know, Boone is about 10 miles west of Ames.) Could this be the shortest (successful) IFR flight ever? hmmm...

I think it was KellyO on the red board that talked about a repositioning flight of about 4 miles straightline that was done IFR, had to shoot an ILS I think. Ive done Ames-Boone-Ames lots of times.

While we're on the subject. Jesse and Tri will be here either way. Who else is planning on coming regardless if we have forecast flyable weather on Saturday? Chris, Kent, Kate? who else?

I have to punch a cold front with a 30-40 degree temperature differential, I can definitely say I won't make it.

I'm still looking at it. Thursday morning will probably be when I make final decision as I was planning to head to EKM that day. Depending on what I think then......well, I just might have to head south to Flordida instead.:p

Thought I told you to order up some reasonable wx.

Depends on your definition of "flyable." I'd rather fly Saturday than drive Friday. If it's flyable IFR, I'll definitely go. If it's fly-land-wait-fly IFR, I might do that too. If there's big bangers everywhere, maybe Saturday. We'll see.

"Chance of showers" could mean a lot of things. Of course, we had an 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms today so it was beautiful out - 75 degrees with a few clouds around 5,000.

If it's flyable IFR, we're a go. I have some instructor time booked for tomorrow evening.

Is there going to be anyone there who might have room to take Leslie back East with them, presuming they come? I'm thinking to maybe do my commercial solo XC on Sunday on the return trip. I could either pick her up at your airport or around Clow. She'd be willing to act as safety pilot if you want some simulated instrument time.

ug. even i am becoming depressed by the forecasts :( Saturday is looking rainy. USAirnet is forecasting ceilings between 500 and 1000. A tad low to be doing glider rides. Sunday is actually looking OK. So....lets get theoretical.

IF Saturday is no good for flying, would you attendees rather:
A) Hope for good ride weather on Sunday or
B) Fall back, regroup, and shoot for April 21st weekend

oh and btw, selecting the 21st has a couple of cool side effects. for one thing, there is a hangar dance in Boone that night. I know Leah and I plan on cutting a rug, Im sure Chris will as well once Rachel sees this. Plus it puts us smack dab in the middle of VEISHA weekend at Ames. for those of you who don't know, VEISHA is Iowa States annual festival. It only breaks out in drunken riots about once every 10 years, last one was 2 yrs ago and no one got killed, i dont think.

I will end up driving there to see Tristan if I can't fly. So I'll be there no matter what. We can always reschedule for the April 21st weekend for the actual gliding if the weather falls apart which it most likely is going to. Anyone want wants to show up this weekend and hang out of course could.

of course. If you folks wanna come out even if there won't be any gliding this weekend, feel free. Im sure Chris will try to blow up a cannister of Propane either way and maybe some meat will get stuck in the flames.

I'm showin up either way tony, someones gotta keep you guys company! :)

Hey! That only happened once... and that was a direct result of too much Crown-and-coke. Oh wait... Nobody here knows that story... uhhh... Nevermind..

Yeah.. I'll have a grill available for the folks that do brave the weather. Nothing planned for me this weekend (other than the Military Ball Sat. night) so I'll be around to chew the cud.

PS: What are a redneck's famous last words? "Hold my beer and watch this!"

Great. Thanks, Tony. You know how much I just LOVE the rug-cutting!

haha, i already heard back from Rachel, she says you two are going to start practicing, so watch out!

You better be there or else it is Tony and Jesse locked up together for the weekend. There could be a terrible case of amour-recidivism for those two.:D:rofl::D

i dont know what amour-recidivism means but it doesnt sound good

Well, things are set up well for me this weekend. Airplane, backup airplane, copilot, Garmin 396... So barring a major change in the forecast temps or a line of storms with no holes, we'll be flying in Friday and out Sunday, lookin' forward to a weekend of... Whatever!

If we get a glider ride in, cool. Extra ride, cooler. :D If the ceilings are too low, I'll happily pile some of the VFR folks into the plane to get a taste of actual. We'll watch movies, eat flame-broiled dead animals, tell (f)lying stories, eat Tony's cookies (which is what we're really going for anyway :D), and have a grand old time.

April 21st might be a bit more difficult. I probably can't get a full 3-day weekend that weekend (friend visiting previous weekend). I might take vacation but if I do it'll be to go to Sun 'n' Fun. If everyone else goes, I will try but it won't be as easy or as long. :(

You should detour to the wonderful city of minneapolis.

ok lets stick with this weekend, and take what we get. chip wont be there. see you friday

I just got 2.2 of actual with an instructor and am now legal to fly the friendly clouds again. Oh, that's right; I should probably get a current approach book for IA. Looks like I might need it! Arriving Friday, out Sunday.

awesome grant, see you friday!

I've got class friday from 9-10 AM and then 3-4 PM. Call me when you get here.

Excellent Grant! Now just be sure the XM subscription is paid up on the DA40XL.

Well, Tony.....I just can't talk myself into chancing the wx.:( This really stinks. You guys have fun and we'll see ya at Gaston's!

Kaye

I kinda figured that Kaye. No worries, have fun with the husband and the dog, see you in June!

Frustrated. I could probably make it there this afternoon. But I doubt that's an option for me.

Crap. most likely be driving. probably get there around 10pm friday

And make sure your planes are KI Kent. You're gonna have freezing levels down pretty low - like almost to the surface.

yea, i suppose that could be true, if the lapse rate was about 40 degF/1000 feet. High for Friday is 70, Saturday is 60...

Not if that warm front sags and the cold front pushes through. Airmet Zulus to the surface just west of ya.

I should probably be comming into Ames around 6-7pm depending on how much I have to chase this frontal system. Hopefully I'll stay just far enough behind it to not slow me down.

For any of you that chances flying tomorrow, be carefull!

Well, the XM was current, but the GPS expired 3/15. I just put in a request to have it updated. Thanks for the reminder! Now, to monitor the weather this evening! I'd hate to have to cancel at this point, but obviously will if need be.

defintely looking better. I wouldnt put all my faith in Saturday. Even if the ceilings do lift enough to be able to tow, that wind is probably at or beyond the limits of the towpilot. All of us are pretty rusty after a winter off.

Okay, call us "overly prudent", but we've opted to forgo the trip. Sorry! We'll see you all at Gaston's. (And this is after I got instrument current and had them update the GPS. Ah well. :() We'll miss the cameraderie!

ok Grant/Leslie, have fun, see you at Gastons.

Kent/Kate - Still on?

Bummer! Sorry we'll miss you, but we'll (hopefully) see you at Gaston's. I'll get the GCN Sectional back in the mail to you ASAP.
