Best aviation Movie I ever saw

Well you folks made me rent it. Looks like a lot of folks asked for it! There email to me said:
Dark Blue World

Unfortunately not (nor is Big Rocks Long Props :D ), but they do have a ton of documentaries, and if you get creative on your search terms you can find some good aviation documentaries.

I just signed up for Netflix yesterday and watched the movie tonight. Oops, couldn't wait for Tom (teaching ground school tonight). Guess I'll have to watch it tomorrow night too. :)

You can request they add a movie ... I requested one six right, and if enough others do, too, perhaps they'll add it?

Got it in the US mail and popped it in immediately! It's very good for modern computer assisted filmography and I enjoyed it but, it still does not beat out Howard's "Hell's Angells" for warfare reality combined with overall aviation ambiance.

Often you can switch to dubbed English or other languages.
 
Yeah, was most of this movie in Czech? (Or whatever language it was).

The whole thing had subtitles and they spoke english maybe 10% of the time.

Great movie... would have liked it better in English though. I hate having to read a movie.
 
i guess its a matter of personal preference. subtitles dont bother me any
 
I grabbed some pop corn. It was 11PM here and I was going to relax for a bit with a movie. But there was no frackin way I was going to read through a movie at that hour, too tired and lost interest. Its in the mailbox ready to be sent back to netflix. Oh well. It looked interesting as it started. :-(
 
Good lord, people - it's not like you're being asked to read and comment on King Lear! How long does it take to take in a subtitle? 1 sec? 2 secs??

Ahh heck, not a big deal true.. but for me I was too tired to read through it. I was more annoyed then anything I guess that my plan had gone pooof for a relaxing couch crash with a movie.
 
watched most of Deep Blue Sky in fast forward, dropped to play for the flying scenes. I hate to admit it wasn't worth the wait for me...

My version just had enough subtitles in the beginning to worry me (I can't read) then they went away after a short while.

Why would I want to limit the movies I can watch to ones only in english? I'd miss lots of good ones. And I hate dubbed movies unless the original actors did the voice-over. I watched "Like Water for Chocolate", or whatever it's called dubbed and it was horrible. It was pretty good with subtitles. Voice-over actors aren't the highest paid (unless you're doing cartoons, I guess), and the performance can be horrible. You see the emotion on the original actor's face and get a wooden monotone from the voice-over. No thanks.

except in the great kung fu movies, overdubbed in british or aussie accents. There the dubbing really adds entertainment value.

I just saw Dark Blue World last night after finding it at my local Hollywood video. The R rating is very tame, nothing sleazy or gratuitous. (sp) (It's late, I'm tired.) The story was riveting and excellent, and the flying scenes were wonderful. The director's commentary and documentary were also good.

Yeah, I bought it. Hey, I'll bring it with to the Glide-a-Thon, for those who haven't seen it. Don't think we'll be doing much actual gliding! :)

It was very tame for an R - I was disappointed :). The flying was great, and the movie as a whole was very entertaining.

Well, I've canceled on the Glide-a-thon, but if Kent wants to swing down here to pick up the video on his way out to Ames, just give me a call and I'll meet at 1C5.
 
I just ordered my copy of Dark Blue World from Amazon - 7.50 for a new DVD. Although it raised a question as I browsed through other aviation DVD's that I don't yet have in my collection. I came upon 16 Right, which I haven't seen yet, but I noticed another movie, 16 Left. I hadn't heard of this one, and I'm assuming it was the prequel to 16 Right. Anyone seen it? Is it worth getting?
 
i think its like the behind the scenes stuff form 16right. never have seen it.
 
I just had to add this comment I found on Amazon about 16 Right.

This DVD is essentially a documentary of KVNY, w/many interesting personal vignettes of people who made careers from aviation (back when you could make a career of aviation).

Back when you could make a career of aviation? Huh?
 
I just watched "Dark Blue World" I would rate it as "OK", I still think Fly Boys was better.
 
Dark Blue World is on IFC (Independent Film Channel) Wednesday morning 4/25/07 at 2:20. Good movie! Tivo it!
