SP logging PIC for dual training in non-LSA?

Here's the scenario, a friend is an SP (no medical). If he were flying with someone who was a CFI, in a non-LSA airplane the instructor can log it as PIC since he'd be the actual PIC and if giving instruction could the SP log it as PIC and dual under the sole-manipulator clause since he holds an ASEL rating, or could the SP only log it as dual since his ASEL rating doesn't include non-LSA aircraft?

This seems like a variation on a PP-ASEL doing dual in an airplane that requires a type rating that he's otherwise qualified for, there the answer would be no because he's not rated for the airplane. I'm curious what the CFI community out there thinks

Sport Pilots are not rated in anything that is not an LSA. So, if it's not an LSA, the Sport Pilot receiving training is not rated in the aircraft and thus cannot log PIC time. So, yes, you are correct that it is similar to a pilot receiving training in a type rating airplane without holding the type rating -- not rated in the aircrft, so no PIC time logged.

Thanks Ron, I was hoping this was more of the case of a PP-ASEL working on complex/HP/TW but I couldn't figure out a way to justify that. Thanks for confirming!

No, those are endorsements, not ratings. And that's the big difference. Also, Sport Pilots do not have "ratings", they have "privileges", and their privileges do not extend to non-LSA aircraft.
