Phenom 100 crash at GAI (Gaithersburg, MD)

Phenom 100 jet into a house just outside KGAI in Gaithersburg, MD. Three houses and the plane are on fire. Fire/rescue responding with reports of people trapped. Multiple search and rescues in progress. Doesn't sound good. Just occurred, right now, no further details yet.

The location is just off the departure end of 32 on Drop Forge Ln. The wind is straight across the runway this morning. The house is right in line with the runway, but no idea if it was a takeoff or landing at this point.
Drop Forge Ln, Gaithersburg, MD

KGAI 081555Z 05005KT 10SM OVC032 M01/M08 A3060 RMK AO1

For reference, GAI is an uncontrolled airport within the SFRA but outside the bravo. They have several clubs and flight schools on the field along with the usual contingent of tenants.

The tail is N100EQ

Hoping for the best... but it doesn't look good,,......

The plume of smoke visible from the news helo a few miles away certainly doesn't bode well.

Can't be good. Can only hope for the best.

A ground witness, take it for what that's worth said it "was struggling back and forth and it looked like a corporate jet" GAI doesn't have much jet traffic though. There is a seminole on flight aware but I think it would be too early, hard to say.

Agreed to be suspicious of any eye-witness at this point, but GAI does see regular jet traffic. Not like Dulles or anything, but it's not at all uncommon. There's usually one jet on the ramp every time I'm there.

Liveatc.net on twitter was reporting it was a Phenom jet. They were also reporting a tail number, but I don't feel comfortable posting that.

This is the tweet:

Gaithersburg crash plane was Nxxxx, a Phenom jet…apparently tried to stay behind a Cessna 172 turning base to final https://twitter.com/hashtag/liveatc?src=hash

Fox reporting, small phenom jet on approach to landing. No other info yet.

Briefing from MCFRS: Phenom 100 jet with three, possibly four on board, all killed. Believed to be nobody in the houses. Fire in three houses with several others damaged. All fire is out. It pretty much looks like a meteor hit the middle of this neighborhood.

Tail is N100EQ out of North Carolina. It is a blocked tail number.

Well WUSA is certainly making it out to be the coming of armageddon. They're interviewing neighbors. They just found the neighbor that just moved in but hates the airport. She's talking about how this airport is so awful and needs to be reviewed. And then admitted she just moved in recently....

It's always nice that the people ,who complain about airports, are the ones that move in long after the airport has been there. Probably a new development.

Not with those huge trees....:no::no:.......:nonod:

At least the reporter followed up her litany of complaints with "And you moved in after the airport was already here?"

It is not a new development. Probably been there since the 60s or 70s.

no....those houses were built in the 70's......

Flew out of there and back in last night. Crazy.

I've seen a Phenom a few times there arriving. Who knows if it's the same one.

Overcast was low, but not super low. Winds weren't an issue. Maybe icing or a mechanical issue on final.

I'm not sure where the information about them being #2 behind a 172 has come from and how official that is. But if that is true, this has the makings of "I don't want to go missed". Or any number of other possible causes. But it certainly brings that possibility closer to the table.

I always feel bad when someone faster than me has to go around, even when I'm keeping it up as quickly as practical. I realize it's silly and completely on the following traffic to maintain spacing. But I can't help but feel like I'm the slow poke that made someone else late. I would feel absolutely terrible if I was the pilot of the 172 (presuming that's what happened).

Dunno about the C-172 rumors but wouldn't doubt a little airplane hate/spin campaign from our friends the big airplane people.

That info came from a LiveATC tweet, which they retracted a short time later. Based on the radio calls, the C172 should have been approaching the downwind-to-base turn and wouldn't have been a factor.

Another Skyhawk on the ground reported heavy bird activity over the runway, which may prove to have been a factor but it's way too soon to say.

Horrible :(! Had not heard about the 172 but one witness said he saw it on approach and then He said it went sideways then hit the house belly up. So if trying to stay slow behind a 172 the possibility is there for a stall spin but who knows, we'll have to see what the NTSB says, just so sad for those lost and their loved ones.

And.... The MCFRS spokesman said they fought a jet fuel fire with foam, so it looks like the plane had some go juice left in it..

Mom and two small children have been found deceased in the house. In addition to the three on board, the total is now 6.

Yep, very sad.

There's also a news report out there that the same pilot had a previous crash (plowed into trees) at GAI in 2010.

This whole story just sucks. Very sad day. I have made a base-to-final turn pretty much over this crash scene more times than I can count. Always hits me harder when folks on ground get hurt...

And some of the residents are asking for closure of the airport in TV interviews....

How does anyone know the pilot's name and if it's the same one from 2010?

Can't say I blame them in the heat of the moment.

I've seen it confirmed on other message boards by people who knew him, but here's a news report from the 2010 accident: http://ww2.gazette.net/stories/03032010/damanew215313_32562.php

And, a report on today's accident including names of the victims on the ground and the accident pilot: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Plane-Crash-Reported-in-Montgomery-County-285090681.html

Quote from the 2010 crash...

""It looks like it came up just short of [the] runway," Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said Monday night."

This idiot pilot is now 2 for 2....:mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2:........:(
