2014 Gaston's Attendee List

After a long days' drive, your pizza will be great! Will you post which cabin here?

That or just ask the front desk. I'll let them know not to be shy to let people know where we're at if someone asks "where's the pizza party?"

I've changed my strategy a bit though. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the logistics of making my pizza at Gaston's was going to be nightmarish. Especially making the dough...which I make in a bread machine...and I'd need to bring two...and I've never pre-made it, thus I don't know how well it would keep and travel.

So, I punted.

and I'm having a great little local pizzeria make four "custom recipe" pizzas for me. They'll make them "take and bake" and I'll bake them at Gaston's.

I'll bring two each:

Sweet and Sassy:

Canadian Bacon
Real Bacon
Onion
Pineapple
Jalapeno Peppers

And for those less adventurous...

Heart of Zeus:

Greek Sausage
Roma Tomatoes
Feta Cheese
Fresh Spinach
Artichoke Hearts

Bring beer and tums!

I can never remember how to add myself to the list.

IF someone wants to update the attendee's list, Greg and I will be there definitely Friday - Sunday and will be "flying" a 2005 Honda Odyssey.

Pookies will be there too.

I don't see Spike or Mr Jones on the list. If either of you see this, are you still planning on gracing us with your presence at Gaston's?

The Bo is in annual... Fingers crossed that it is out in time ....

It is possible that I may make the scene on an abbreviated basis. I intend to try!

I really wish we could be there, but we'll be at Bardstown, KY, KBRY.

Grant: I like you, but will really miss your bride, whose charms are legendary.

That is, of course, if I can get there.

And Troy, one can only hope... :D

Well, it's a 99's Conference, so she'll be with me, rather than letting me loose amongst all those female pilots!

And I'm afraid there's (a lot) less of her to miss than last you saw her! We'll both miss you!

I really hate it that you and my favorite co-pilot aren't making it, Grant! Maybe we can have an EYE lunch fly-in later in the fall.

To all who are making it...Thursday night's pizza (at least the ones that Tim and Chris are bringing) will be in cabin #30.

We're also bringing a bunch of Missouri microbrews:

Schlafly--Hefeweizen
Schlafly--Belgian Style Ale
Charleville--Half-Wit Wheat
Big Piney Brewery--McKinney Eddy Amber
Crown Valley---Farmhouse Lager
Crown Valley---Big Bison

It'd be fun if everyone brought microbrews from their area to trade back-n-forth over the weekend.

Also, what happened to the "Gaston's Dam Approach" plate that was posted here a few years ago? I can't find it.

I'm not sure if we have any newbies coming this year or not but I think that approach plate should be a sticky in the Gaston's forum.

Yes, please. I have a way I like to approach gastons, but no idea if is the norm for others...

Why Gaston's in September is better than in June:

Jinx, jinx, jinx!!!!

Seriously, I've been keeping an eye on the weather too and, if the current forecast holds, it's going to be a glorious weekend!

Here is the approach....

Enter the pattern from the left traffic down wind, shoot the gap on final and trim the trees. Once clear of the gap, push the yoke over and point the nose at the ground. Thread your plane through the two oak trees and if successful, get ready the rattle down the grass strip. Once on the grass, easy on the brakes and use aerodynamics to slow the plane. Once stopped, pick up you teeth from the floor, wipe the sweat from your brow reflect on why you go to church and think forward that you HAVE to fly out at some point now.....

Easy peasy!

It ain't that bad (now I can't do something stupid). Anyway, I usually come in from the south and cross midfield to make sure I'm lined up properly, turn upwind, crosswind, and then go for the procedure you outline.

I've only been skeerd once in a da20... Came in a little hot and wondered if I was going to be driving up the road before I got it stopped :hairraise:

Such drama!

Just be sure you coordinate with departing traffic, since it's one way in, one way out (land 24, depart 6).

The "Dam Approach" is for use when there is a lot of traffic during a fly-in, keeping things orderly. Jesse posted a handy video of it at the GastonsFlyIn.com website.

I know.... It's not bad really. My first grass landing was at Gastons. But it's sure more exciting than touch and gos at the local square.

The video I made...which Jim Gastons commented on at one point and said it's how it should be done.

Well, this one isn't nearly as nice as the one that Nick put together numerous years back. His actually replicated an approach plate (IIRC) and was far cooler.

But here's my rendition of the "dam approach" as I understand it to be. This is about a 0.6 mile pattern but it keeps the runway in sight while in the pattern...and keeps you from running into the bluff to the east and northeast.

A bigger pattern on downwind results in the runway being blocked from view by the high ridge across (south of) the river.

FWIW

And, when it comes to departure, many people turn right and fly down the river but I prefer the "slot in the bluff" departure so I don't have to mess with all the powerlines:

But, one needs to be awake when he/she pops out of the top of the bluff and make sure you have BPK's CTAF (123.00) in Comm2 because this is what you'll see.

I'll never understand why Gaston's isn't on the same freq as BPK and FLP.

Well, still working on the Bo.. (Annual time..) Grrr. Love any excuse to go to Gastons. Wait, I'll get the Bo back shortly anyway - hmmm. I'll have to make a trip to test out the new rigging !

Anyway, sounds like fun, but it's likely a 50/50 chance I'll get to go ...

Looks like we may be at Gastons tomorrow night (Thursday) after all...at least later in the evening. Save us some pizza!

For Thursday evening only
...anybody happen to have a cabin with an extra bedroom thats not being used?...and would like to help recoop some costs from it? We can get a motel type room but thought if somebody had space they wanted to fill in their own cabin, we would go that route instead. Danielle will be with us so we would also need a couch or floor for her to sleep on as well...or if somebody else had an extra couch or bed for her to sleep on...

We'd love to have you but our extra BR is taken Thursday night by a surprise guest!

Pizza party in cabin 30 (unless they switch us) there will be plenty...come on down!

The weather forecast still looks wonderful albeit a touch warm especially for this time of the year. That along with the light winds which are forecast may mean the fog along the cold river lingers a tad longer in the mornings.

It's pretty but makes it kinda hard to get in. ;) (or out)

We should be landing at Gaston's at or before 2 PM CDT.

Looking forward to it, especially looking forward to drinking all of Troy's beer!

:goofy:

Travel safe, all!

FYI... FIFI and the CAF Airpower Tour is at Drake Field (KFYV) today through Sunday. It is also Bikes, Blues and BBQ in Fayetteville this weekend.

Jealousy runs deep here, was hoping to be able to make it this year!!!!!

Hmmm...that sounds like it could be a cool day trip...fly-out on Saturday.

I just sat down in the cabin a popped a beer. Andrew and Mike are about ten minutes out.

Arrived! Cabin 6. Chilling the craft brews and cooking two pizzas before heading to cabin 30!

You guys need to keep this thread updated and post some pics.
I don't believe any of you are all real. I think it is all a big hoax put on by Mr. Hacky :)

Y'all be safe.
