Vapor ware

At least the cobalt has some decent quality renders not just a concept sketch. I love the idea of a canard design but from ez, starship, velocity, piaggio, no one seems to have figered out how to make it successful.

I just hate seeing the industry continue to overpromise and under deliver (icon, terifugia, even cirrus a decade ago).

Haha, perfect! That was the first kit plane I was so sure I was going to build. I was about 21, so I had it all figured out as we all do at that age. ;)

I've been watching this for a while more out of curiosity to see if it actually goes anywhere. If he succeeds (and I know that's a huge if) it would be an impressive airplane. For me it doesn't hurt to follow what's going on, but I'm not putting any cash towards it.
 
Did y'all see the video yet? Some of the features are pretty well thought out.

 
If they build it, I'd write the check tomorrow.

I don't think it's do-able, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Seems pretty neat, and the guy is a hell of a lot smarter than I am, but that control system looks pretty heavy..Lots of parts.
 
Perhaps will see plans available down the road. Even if this thing is 200k out the door. I would buy it tomorrow. I wish him luck, but I certainly don't see it getting farther then plans

Not sure how Raptor would get tagged as Open Source. Nothing free about it. If you want open source, you, me, and 1000 or other people failed to pony up for the Maker Plane.

Bit of a bummer as I met the guy at Oskkosh. He was looking for money just to keep some semblance of a small crew working on it to get it delivered. But, I don't think was able to capitalize on the small news splash the plans got. So, it is a labor of love and may not ever make it out into the real world.
 
He might have an easier time if he gave up on trying to develop yet another Diesel engine and instead focused on the airframe

I think because my post count is low, I cannot put in web links (I've tried to reply twice).

My view of "open source" came from the Raptor FAQ page (on the Raptor web site), and that is:

By taking the open source path, there should be no limit to capacity. By definition, open source will generate multiple vendors, in multiple countries very early in the life of the Raptor. By vendors we are speaking of suppliers of every single component of the Raptor. Our plan is to become the central knowledge/approval/control repository for all of the pieces/parts of the Raptor, then offer it to our customers, at our cost, as a completed package.

Anyhow, Open Source means that the files would be available for the public to modify and use for their own uses, as long as the source is referenced (you can't say it's entirely your own work). You can check in the modifications or new ideas into the repository, and the managers of that can use it in the final design.

(I'm sorry if this is redundant, or if you already knew this; I'm just answering the question that you posed on the "not sure how the Raptor got tagged as "open source" - the Raptor people did it.)
 
The guy's got a facility, CNC machine and at least one employee, so it seems there's some kind of progress.

If he gets the prototype flying and meeting specs, I would put down a deposit.

Perhaps he should consider using the new EPS engines.

mmmm yup. Lots of love (and $$) have been spent chasing the holy grail of a high quality, low cost, power unit for aircraft by using mass produced auto engines. Other than very small numbers used in experimental aircraft that are actually flying it has been a loser. (and their reliability statistics are dismal)
Diesel would be perfect except for one small issue. Look at the Duramax engine in my truck. It makes 800 foot pounds of torque at 1400 rpm and 400 hp in the mid 2000 rpm range. You can put 6 tons behind the truck and stand on the throttle for 21 continuous hours from Michigan to Florida and the engine doesn't even break a sweat. I do it twice a year. Perfect for a direct drive propeller installation in an aircraft.
The one small issue?
Weight and liquid cooling. (ya, ya I know that's two issues, never claimed to be great at math)

see my earlier post..."low cost". Let's define that to be equivalent in price to a Lycoming clone for experimentals, i.e. 28K new.
