Yeah, this was a really cool summer. Can't complain one bit, not a huge fan of the humid heat. But hard to believe fall is already upon us.

I'll try to be there... How long is the runway going to be this year? Need to decide whether the Mooney will make it in or not. Where's the airport manager?

Normally - With a relatively unobstructed, paved surface - this plane (M20R Ovation) will get out of any place you can get it into, with those caveats. With 280hp, it has some get up and go. However, the climb gradient isn't particularly steep because of its relatively high climb speeds.
For the arrival, it's a matter of being able to get it down and stopped without a lot of traction - It easily eats up 1500 feet on a short-field landing on a paved surface with heavy braking. With limited braking ability on grass (especially if it's wet at all), I expect to use most of the runway for landing.
But... I want to be sure the runway is really going to be 2600 feet this year!

Anyone with you? You can also plan your fuel with just enough to get back to Clintonville. I'll pick you up at Land O Lakes, but then I like to be light for a grass T/O too.
You may have to do some testing like those 'Doolittle Raiders' did before their mission?

It has been 2600 ft since the 2nd year. It has 400ft displaced thresholds.
Runway surface condition is as good as it's ever been (sidnaw hump etc.)
We have had a Mooney in with upper and lower gear covers on. Not much clearance though, but no damage. It was an 200 hp. M-20 something C or F I dunno???
So using the displaced threshold you will have 2200 ft. if you touch down at the three cone disp. thresh. If I were you I'd find a long grass field( field length not grass length
and run some tests.If in doubt someone can pick you up at KLNL, Car or plane.
Do you have speed brakes on that Ovation? How slow of an approach speed can you hold? Can you spot land on a dime (threshold markers) without the float of those wings that want to keep flying?

I was asked if I was going to do a safety briefing this year---- Nope I was accused of being a Mother Hen so anyone concerned about safety read past years posts, nothing has changed other than yearly tree growth.

One change I didn't mention:
We have changed nothing on the airfield except that 6Y9 is now classified as an Unimproved Airport (Mi. Aeronautics Code R 259.248) ( It was a Basic Utility R 259.243). This new classification states "land at your own risk" Every thing else is the same as a Basic Utility Airport. 6Y9 exceeds all other Unimproved category requirements.

Jeannette and I are driving this year so there will be another driver available if people need picked up.
For the record Brad, I found your information on the field invaluable last year. I asked lots of questions and discussed it with both you, and Ed. Also worked on my grass field takeoff and landing techniques before pointing the Arrow north. Turned out it was a non event but I prepared.

OK... I guess I never found out about the resolution of the land dispute or whatever it was a couple years ago. Glad to hear it's all still there.

Yes, but normally, I pop them out after touchdown. If you have them out during the flare you're guaranteed to have an "arrival". In this case, that might be OK - Maybe I'll pop them out as soon as I'm in a position to touch down.
That's probably the bigger difference between this and the other Mooney - The Ovation is heavy (nearly 3400 lbs. MGW), so I have to keep it to a bare minimum of 70 knots into the flare, and that's right on the edge (about 1.07Vs0, leaving just enough AoA to flare if the descent rate is low). Even if I don't float, 3400 pounds at 70 knots is a lot of momentum to get rid of with small tires on grass.
But - It's all a moot point, my partner wants to take the plane on Labor Day weekend and he doesn't have a club for backup, so I'm going to let him have it and I'm going to take the R182 which will have no problem getting into 6Y9.

I just found a handwritten list from the first fly in that we hosted! How fun it was to see all the names of those who came and those who tried to come! That was 8 fly ins ago….wow.
SO- the one coming up in just a tad over a week- I’m assuming the pot luck for Friday is still a go? Unfortunately, the new bar/restaurant/gas station has had its share of delays so it will not be open. The new owner was shooting for the grand opening to coincide with the fly in, but that’s not going to happen. The café doesn’t stay open very late.
That all being said, it would be nice to have a head count and an idea on who is bringing what. Last year we supplied the chicken and can do that again…unless everyone wants to bring their own grilling stuffs? The Friday eve gathering will be at the “big brick camp” again.
Thoughts anyone?

I'm a newby for the big event, but should be there 1200L on Sat if the wx cooperates. I'll just be glad to be there, have some local contacts that may drive in too.

Whoa Kent.. It has been a while for you.
Hoppy's is a tractor + hayrack or back of pickup truck or a combination thereof ride down the highway. The place that burned down was where Rachel and Tony (and you?) sang karaoke one night. That place was behind the restaurant we mostly ate breakfast at, which was across the road from the airport.Really bummed that we will miss it again this year. We just got back from 5 days at the beach and I can definitely say that our kids are not at the age where we could handle the fly-in just yet. The ~ 3 y/o would be ok, but the 5 month old is in that weird semi-mobile stage where you can't just plop him in a crib and him be happy, but you also can't just lay him on a pallet on the ground because he will roll away before you know it, so he's always attached to somebody's hip which gets old pretty quick.
I really want to get both the kids up there when they are old enough to kind-of remember it and take them out into the woods and show them that 'the woods' it not just what they have preserved inside the state park boundaries.

Ooooh! Shows ya how long it's been since I've been there.
Actually we did Hoppy's both Friday & Saturday nights, with an extra stop at the Trail's End for those who didn't want to call it a night just yet. And yes, the Trail's End burned down.
Going to Hoppy's on Friday would sometimes get complicated as everyone comes in at a different time and we hated to leave anyone behind. We don't always know when everyone is showing up, hence the potluck was started last year, and worked out quite nicely.

Yeah, I remember Hoppy's is in the next town over to the west and that one that burned down was across the road (east) from Ma's Kitchen (?). I remember eating there a time or two.
Actually, one of my fondest memories of 6Y9 was pulling up in front of Trail's End on the ATV's one night to eat dinner. We shut the machines down, looked at the still-slightly-above-the-horizon sun, I said "y'know, we could go flying again." We looked at each other, Ed said "Let's go" and peeled out, and five minutes later we were in the air. Briefing? Hah, the sky is blue and they probably haven't had a TFR there ever. Preflight? Well, we were just flying earlier. It was the shortest time from idea to wheels up I've ever had, and the air was smooth and clear and the flight awesome. (Weren't you in the right seat of 71G on that flight?) Ahhhh.

Yes I have some cast iron you can borrow & we can make a grocery run. The grocery store, five miles away, also has new owners and they are doing a wonderful job! As a matter of fact, I am ordering some of the fly in stuff through them.

Very sad to hear that. That evening was the epitome of why small towns are awesome. Was that the same gentleman that we visited his cabin waaay out in the woods on the 4-wheelers one afternoon? There are so many friendly folks up there, I can't keep them all straight!
