Hello fellow aviators, I'm based at Stearman Field (1K1) just outside Wichita, and I'm looking for fun places to fly to in my Skyhawk this summer...I'd prefer to go south, and would prefer within a 3 hour (325nm) radius, but I could go further:)...anyone know of any fun or otherwise interesting places to check out? Thanks!!

You might want to try Gaston's in north central Arkansas. If you like to fish, trout fishing there is great.

Go see Jay down on the gulf?

Coolest I place I have flown so far is hanger hotel in Fredricksberg Texas.
That is a fun little get away.

You and Eren need to put the September Gastons trip on your calendar

Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas.

Great idea, but Amelia's Landing Hotel is 591 nm from Wichita. That's outside of his prescribed envelope.

But if you want a real aviation-themed hotel, we are it -- c'mon down and see us!
:)

You should go to the cessna 172 club fly in next weekend in Winfield, ks (KWLD)

We will do it.

let me know the dates and I will put it on our calendar.
I have very little flying planned for the next few months so looking for overnight / weekend things like that.

All great suggestions!! Thanks!! Beaumont (07S) is a fun little breakfast/lunch hop for me, about 15 minutes, and they have very good food. I have heard many great things about We B Smokin', and have yet to try it. By far, my favorite fly-in dining is Enrique's, about a 30 minute flight.

See if the FAA is offering altitude chamber rides or other fun classes in OKC.

I got to do that. It is free and everyone should do it.
very eye opening and a lot of fun.

I just checked out the website for this place It looks like a great stop.

One of these days when weather in michigan goes south ( pun intended) I want to take the wife for a week trip down to Austin, San antonio, Gruene area and this should be an easy stop near by for a night.

Thanks!!:)

You should bring a lawn chair & cooler to your hanger at Stearman this Saturday. The 21st is the 7th annual Stearman Field fly in!

Are you new to Stearman?

As for cool places to fly, go to Beaumont Hotel (07S) 29nm ESE of Stearman. Go light because it is a 2400 foot grass strip. After you land taxi up main street to the Beaumont Hotel for lunch or dinner.
I have not done it yet, but it is on my list.

There is also Dodge City an hour or so directly west of Stearman. You know, the Get the Heck Out of Dodge, Dodge City.

Also, Cedar Mills (3T0) on Lake Texoma is a cool little get-away. Grass strip right by the water, cabins overlooking the airstrip. Good restaurant you can walk to.

Hangar Hotel & Fredericksburg is more fun, but Cedar Mills will be a couple hours closer for you.

Nice museum in Liberal, have a burger at the Chubby Pickle in Phillipsburg, museum at Fort Riley, Eisenhower museum in Abilene and when you need fuel, K88 (Allen County) down in Iola.
