As of the end of the day I have ten airmen who cannot be issued due to OKC's medical officers not being there. They are accepting and scanning documents, but that's all.

sigh.
this sucks.

Aw, cheer up. I'm sure they're still being paid and will make up for the lost work in unpaid overtime when they return. :)

I've been filling out the medxpress form, appointment is 21 Oct, hopefully there will be no issues, with me or the computer.

Is it still possible for an AME to issue direct at the office? I'm glad I got mine done a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, if there are no issues, or if the issuance can be "CACI'd", or if there is already a multiyear authorization that you can satisfy.

....but the year by year stuff in which approval is held by the agency and not by the AME, fuggedaboudit.

Personally, I think OKC has been "non-operational" for a very long time.

Elections have consequences.

Get use to it.

That they do. I'm not gonna whine about losing time over something like this because in the larger picture, something has to be done. Involving the feds for every little check box, on every little form, for everyone who wants to fly(larger than LSA) is a mistake. Most of it should be farmed out, and allow others who can actually do some work take over responsibility if the fedguv is going to spend billions with nothing to show for it.

The FAA farms out just about every other function so why not the AME cert stuff?

The FAA still has one of the easiest systems in the world when it comes to medicals.

Where I'm at right now ALL medicals must be issued by the Civil Aviation Authority which means a trip every six months to a city 300 miles away. The medical takes 2 days to complete and even includes a dental check and chest Xray. Things the FAA lets you have waivers on is impossible to obtain here.

I predicted this some time ago. Good luck getting your aircraft registered while you're at it. New certificates?

This is where I'm at today and am being told to expect a wait of a few months once the shutdown is over.

Yep, the FAA is the world's easiest and cheapest medical system.

I'm sure this is true, for anyone without a medical issue. I believe this thread is reflective of those who need more than just a rubber stamp type, since it involves Dr Bruce.

Oh, and comparing the US system, where by the constitution all the power resides with the people to some 3rd world craphole, isn't really valid. Even if it's not a 3rd world country, the US is special for a reason, and that reason is because we control our own destiny(with the 'help' of the FAA, DHS, EPA, NSA, DOT, etc).

For those with most of the medical issues you get an SI for in the US, you get flatly denied for everywhere else. Please, control your own destiny in the US... :rofl:you're killing me...:rofl::rofl: Euthanasia and suicide are illegal...

So - first you point out the actual fact of self-governing being the better plan(with assistance from the FAA), then you deride that which you trump. Interesting examples too. One is murder, which I'm pretty sure is illegal just about everywhere, and the second is a law without consequence. What are you going to do with someone that commits suicide? Put them in jail?.

If you want to play both sides of the argument, I'm gonna let you do that on your own.

Chest X-ray every six months? Are they TRYING to give you cancer?

The only way this could have been prevented through the election process would have been to put either party in control of the House, Senate, and White House. That's not easy to do.

For those of you who are leaning towards making this thread political, please don't go there.

Well, it is political. Both sides are equally as ****ed up and you are now seeing the results. Americans have become so apathetic you are now seeing the results and it's only going to get worse.

If you want to see real outrage of the average American cancel Monday Night Football or take American Idol off the air. :nonod:

Compared to other agencies, at least the FAA has kept web pages up and running during the shutdown.

You can still do all kinds of nonessential things, like spend $10 to reserve an N-Number on the FAA website. Of course there probably isn't anybody sitting in an office to do the manual parts of processing the request, so that will just get queued up.

It will go to the SZ if you keep it up, then the information will be lost to many people.

I got my student medical done today with no issues online. I tried to get information sent to me about a plane I'm looking at and when clicking on the checkout link it just sat there. Not sure if that's related to the shutdown.

no, it's more true of special issuances. The US FAA bends over backwards to accomodate issues and grant medicals. Pilots flying with missing limbs, monocular vision, post-cancer treatment, post-organ transplant, post heart-attack. These things are unthinkable in most parts of the world. I have licenses in 4 countries and the USA is a cakewalk both technically and bureaucratically compared to the other 3.

Yes, I get that and I agree. What we can also say is that this great system is right now on hold, and unavail as Dr Bruce has relayed. So - being that it's a great system, and is the envy of the rest of the world, it would be really, really nice if it were operational at this time.

Get it?

Yup, none of this applies to the heathy airman, with no DUIs and no meds.
My list is now up to 14.

reading these boards would lead one to think that nearly all pilots have either DUI's or mood-altering drugs in their past

those with boring old heart conditions or traumatic head injuries, don't even merit an honorable mention

Negative. But some of us ARE youn & healthy and still have to jump through hoops because of a childhood diagnosis that has never impacted life. No, not ADD. And those of us who unluckily scheduled a trip to Peoria get to fight with the airlines in hopes of an inexpensive date change.... I could throw a pity party or just deal with it. I feel a heckuva lot worse for Bruce than for me.

I can only guess what your workday is going to be like once the upper level reviewers you need to work with return.

Multiply your growing list with the number of other top AME's like you, and the OKC doc's are going to be pretty busy those first few days.

There's yet another wrinkle. The contractor, Keybridge, which runs the scanning and call centers, is only okay until the END of the month. Try getting any documents in after THEY go home.

I was on medxpress today updating the form. My appointment is the 21st. Not expecting any issues. At least the web page is still working.
