Fellow pilots,

I have spent more than a year writing what I think is the best aviation weather app available, Takeoff Aviation Weather. I have just released another update (they tend to come every few weeks as I add functionality based on requests), and want to get feedback from specifically CFIs and student pilots.

The app appeals directly to CFIs and students as it is based around the premise of personal minimums. You enter your minimums and weather is shown in a color-coded way to let you know if you are good to go. Beyond that, it also offers a market-leading amount of available data, and has been polished for iOS and Android with a massive attention to detail.

I have 20 free copies to give away, but I ask for 3 things in return:
  • Please provide SOME feedback to help me continue to improve the app. You will get future updates for free
  • Please only take ONE (iPad or iPhone)
  • Please help me spread the word about Takeoff!

Regular pilot, and I'll take a look at it and provide feedback.

Thanks! Please keep it brutally honest. Since version 1, this app has evolved based on feedback from pilots. Many of those being from PoA!

Student pilot with an IT dev background here who is about to embark on several solo XC flights over the next few weeks - happy to help with the iPhone app! Look forward to it, too - great looking app, btw!

Perfect! Looking forward to some feedback!

Sorry, I accidentally redeemed

before I realized I needed iTunes on my computer...I hit a different link from my iPad directly successfully, but that one now shows as "redeemed"

Looks really good, nice clean and easy to use interface on the iPad.

One thing I'd like to see is the option to have Day/Night minimums. For example, in daylight, I'm happy flying with a 2,500' ceiling, but at night...not so much (can't necessarily see the clouds to avoid them!) Have similar differences in my personal minimums for visibility and such between day/night.

I helped before, but I'm android. So can't help on this one yet.

Looks nice, I would have liked to try it, but I passed since I don't have any experience really with other apps to be able to give constructive/useful feedback.

Unfortunately too late to get a copy... All tokens posted are redeemed.

You can actually do this! If you go to the minimums page, there is a set of profiles in the top right, which you can rename. The default one is Profile 1, but you could rename that to Day. Then switch to Profile 2, and rename that to Night.

Showed this to my CFI yesterday and he thought it was very cool.

Would you like us to use the in-app support/contact link to submit feedback?

It would be nice if the weather maps rotated and re-sized when the phone is shifted to landscape mode.

As a new student pilot this is an awesome app that will come in handy, thanks and keep up the great work

I really don't like the static icons for wind and wind direction. First impression when I open up the local winds is, HOLY CRAP the flag is sticking straight out!

Maybe you could have 4 different icons to represent a subset of wind speeds and directions.

Derek, I've loved this app from day 1, and I love that you keep adding features.

I ran across a bug in this latest version... this is on the TAF page for my local airport (KCJR)

Not sure what's going on here, but it ain't pretty... ;)

Also, a feature I asked about a while ago, and haven't seen make it in... the ability to set a different airport as the "TAF Facility" for one of your favorite airports. The airport airport which generates TAFs nearest to my home airport is on the other side of a mountain range, and often has vastly different weather. There's another airport about 5 miles further away, but on the same side of the mountains as I am, and that's the one we always use for TAFs. I'd love to be able to specify another airport as the TAF facility for any of my saved airports.

Let me know if that request doesn't make sense.

Loved testing the Android version. Still have to buy it since Beta expired.

Looks like they're all taken for the iPad, which is what I'd use with my students.

That works, or here as well so everyone can talk about suggestions and problems together.

Thanks for pointing this out! Looks like something strange is going on there.

If you let me know what TAF you want showing up for which airport, I can change it for everyone (since no one would want one on the other side of the mountain!).

Great idea, I will look into this and see if there is a way to get icons that look decent for this.

The Android version is excellent as well! I highly recommend picking it up

Is it an intentional marketing decision to have a separate version for iPad vs iPhone? I.e., you expect users to purchase both versions if they want an iPhone backup in case their iPad crashes? If this isn't intended,it would be nice if either there was a single version, or at least for the more expensive version to run on both device types.

Very impressive! Still playing with many of the features but I really like what I am seeing. More feedback to follow.

Thanks!

Can I get some feedback on this change? Take a look at this screenshot and let me know what you like/dislike about the wind icons and what you would change. They now change according to wind strength.

Thanks!

Derek, wonderful app! I'm liking what I see... One suggestion, are you considering the option to switch from earth view to section view! Perhaps include IFR Low/ High Charts, would be a great IFR planner for alternates

Derek - I like what I see so far - will continue using it and post back. Thank you!

I think all "spots" are taken... Thanks the same.

Ahhh...see that now...so, amend my comment to make that more obvious and intuitive for idiot pilots!

That's way better in regards to the wind speed indications!
