My oldest daughter is on course for getting tenure in May. She was handed a letter of recommendation from the university president that is going to the board of regents for final approval. She is 35 and has been working very hard at this goal. I am very proud of her to say the least, she is an amazing woman despite my best efforts raising her. ;)

What is an appropriate gift for this "accomplishment" or professional recognition, or what ever you call it.

Engraved pen set?
Flying lessons? :D
Ask her for a loan?

What did the tenured profs here get, or what would you like to have gotten? Ideas from anyone welcome of course. I'm not really good at ideas like this. I'm good at getting them once I figure it out. One year I got my first wife a bathroom scale for Christmas.

Thanks in advance.

I bet she would like an RV-10!!!!!!!

Sorry, that's what you would have suggested.

Come on Dad, a brand new one in her preferred colors would be in order.

I am the last person to ask about buying anything for a woman!!!

I was thinking more in the Cub price range.

She makes more money than I do!

Most universities have a gift catalog. One item I have seen in both of the ones I get from my old schools that would seem appropriate is a Windsor Chair with the University Seal on the back. They look high quality and can fit in any style house.

Cheers

A really nice and engraved pen set is both appropriate and stylish. Of course I shouldn't hesitate to add that nice jewelry is an appropriate present for any woman for any occasion.

Which department does she work in?

As much as I like and respect you as a fellow experimental guy, I will add my .02 cents.......

NO ONE deserves tenure.... If you are good ,the business will keep you.. If you are not then they should have the option to can you.... .

With that said.... I would take the third choice and ask her for a loan, and then not repay the loan.... She can chalk it up to the cost of you raising her...

I've always been a fan of giving a briefcase or bag as a recognition for a professional accomplishment like this. Kinda says "you can stop schlepping your stuff around in a backpack, you're a professional now."

Of course the traditional briefcase has gone out of style, but there are tons of bags that work and are stylish... this popped up on a google search.

I still use the one my dad gave me when I graduated college.

Anew briefcase/bag is a good idea. I'd want that if I were a new full prof.
With my initials on it too maybe

Business college, marketing department.

I like the pen set idea a lot, and the chair thing! Cool!

Great ideas all! Please keep them coming!

OTOH many of us made that change after college, and 20 years later have returned to using a backpack

Pens are easy to lose, chairs not so much.

Cheers

Whatever the gift... congratulations! Quite the accomplishment.

Gary

I was a single parent raising ( awarded full custody after a custody battle). She is independent as hell, and we debated a lot, ( wonder where she got that from:rolleyes:) but never got into trouble. She started college, graduated, worked for a few years for The Gallup Org, then went back to school for her masters and PhD. Tough, driven woman, who is expecting her first baby in July! :goofy:

Maybe I should get her counseling after living under my roof. :dunno: ;)

A golden clock that counts down to retirement :)

Give her something like an elevator kit. Now that she can slouch off at work whe has plenty of time to build....

Thanks one and all for the great idea. This gets me on the right track. Some thing permanent, personal, & professional.

Keep the ideas coming!

A car is always appreciated.

First of all, congratulations to you and your daughter! But wait a minute--35 years old and looking at tenure? Your finger slipped, right? You meant to type 45? Wow. obviously a brilliant and motivated teacher!

What would I want? This is personal, but for me, I would just want to have my Dad here when I get it. He was a tenured professor at SMU, and I always admired him. For decades, I was looking forward to the day he could be there when I received tenure, but he died a few years ago.

Get something nice, Geico, but I'd bet just you being there when your daughter and professor is acknowledged will mean the MOST to her!

A pair of Bose noise reduction ear muffs. I'm only partly kidding.

She is going to sit through endless committee meetings as the token tenured faculty representative at this and that meeting. And they are endless.

Congratulations, Dad. Just BE THERE. :)
