Wipe them both and put them on Ebay. Some wizkid will make one great tablet out of your scraps and the dough you make will offset your new purchase.

Well, after 9 months of daily usage, in countless situations, my wife managed to shatter the screen on my Nexus 7. She, of course, has no idea what happened, or any recollection of any incident that could have exerted the titanic twisting or side impact forces necessary to shatter a Nexus 7 INSIDE HER PURSE, INSIDE HER NEXUS 7 CARRYING CASE.

Which, by the way, is also sporting a shattered (but still functional) screen.

Mine is totally dead.

This make her last three cellphones, and now two tablets, smashed. I need a militarized Nexus 7.

I will be picking up a new one.

I would, but I can't get mine to do anything except turn on. Someone who replaced the touchscreen would have all my stuff. Mary's actually still works, and she's getting by with it.

The wonderful thing about the N7 is that I am STILL money ahead over an iPad, even after buying two of them.

Did Walmart ask you for a "replacement" plan?

LOL, a few months back I was at Dicks, they offered a replacement plan on some cheap ($30) ice skates. The plan cost like $9. No thanks!!

Yep. I declined. :D

And...here I am on my new 32 GB Nexus 7, thanks to Wallyworld being open late. :D

Best part of Google -- it continues to auto restore all of my apps.

Mary will get this one in May (or July, or whenever) when the new version comes out.

Are you sure that wasn't Mary's plan when she put the other one in her purse?? :goofy:

It's called an iPad. ;)

3 iPhones, 2 iPads, and nearly 6 years in as an iOS user and I've only managed to break one screen, even with plenty of abuse - in fact, I used to throw my original iPhone around on purpose to show people how tough it was (and it never broke, either.)

Pfft. I've never broken any smartphone or tablet, of ANY make. And I've owned quite a bunch of them. Android phones and tablets are plenty tough.

Trust me -- my wife could break your iPad. :D

Send it my way instead and once I get it going I'll wipe it without ever peeking at your stuff!:D

I just flew with both. I have used the ipad before and found it easy to use with foreflight and garmin. But I like the underdog and the Avilution is the underdog. The program and Nexus 7 worked great. I flew two approaches and the 7 is so much easier to handle than the ipad. Perfect size for the approach plate. Very bright day and I could see the approach plate with no problems. Easy to swap from VFR sectional to IFR low. Double tap the airport and it pulls up all the data. Tap on the approach and viola, easy. For the money can't beat the Nexus.

Our airline was just approved to start using the Ipad. I waited to see what kind of restrictions they were going to have on the use of the Ipad. It will be strictly for business. So after a lot of research, I opted for the nexus 7. I am still money ahead, what is that one or two hours of flying.

Avilution is an easy to use program. I wish I could swipe between plates and I will have to look into how to make it easier. I was flying a Garmin G1000 plane so I actually have too much data, if that can ever be the case.

So, while I love apple, we are a MAC family, iphones and computers, I love the nexus 7 and avilution.

Hope this helps.

There was a viola on the approach. There's a sad musician out there somewhere. :wink2:

Avilution ...
Thanks for drawing my attention to it. I had looked a year or so ago and thought that it was pretty limited and immature. I have downloaded the trial and will play with it. First impression: I think it's much better now.

One thing I noticed on my N7 is that the charts are somewhat distorted. All round circles (airspace, compass roses, etc.) are flattened into ellipsoids. Slightly wider and shorter than the circle. Are you guys seeing that?

Doesn't happen on my Droid XYBoard 8.2. Circles are circles.

I just replaced my iPad 3 with a Nexus 7, 2013 version. I wanted a smaller device, and while I have been a iPad fan for years, I decided to give an Android Tablet a try. I have an Android phone, so there wasn't much of a learning curve. I am VERY impressed with the Nexus 7. An added bonus is that is was $160 cheaper than a equivalent iPad Mini.

Now I need to decide if I should pay for the Garmin Pilot app or just use the free fltplan.com maps...

Actually, there is no equivalent iPad Mini. The Nexus 7 has a much faster processor and much better graphics than the current Mini.

I still use my Nexus 7 (2012 version), daily. I'm going to get a Nexus 9 with LTE so I have a bigger screen in the cockpit, and a little bit more capability. I'll post a review.

Which is a HUGE mistake, IMHO.

The 9" tablet is just too big.
Agreed. I was planning to replace my original N7 with the new Nexus tablet, but if I had wanted a big tablet I would have bought the N10 in the first place. For once, Google has saved me some money.

Someone didn't tell Amazon, still showing 16gb $180 and 32gb $251 for 2013 7s.

Yup. I was first in line...until I saw the size of the Nexus 9.

If it doesn't fit in my cargo shorts pocket, it ain't getting bought. The 7" tablet is the perfect form factor, IMHO.

Different strokes for different folks--I've flown with an iPad, an iPad Mini, and the Google Nexus. I like the iPad. I like the size, I like being able to read it without zooming, and Garmin Pilot works better on the iPad than it does the Nexus. The Android updates are always about 6 months behind (or more) the Apple updates for it. (My husband has one). I have the iPad on my lap, or on the seat next to me, or on the floor in between the seats, or in the pocket next to me, and it all works great.

On the iPad screen--I've had the same iPad for years now, and last year at Oshkosh my 13 year old daughter was using it to film a "video" with some of her friends. One of her friends swung a bicycle chain, which hit my iPad right on the face, and cracked it pretty severely. That was four months ago, and my iPad is still ticking along just fine, even with a cracked screen. That is a tough sucker. I will be getting a new one when this one quits working, but in the meantime it's an old iPad 2 with a spiral fracture that still does the job just how I want it to. It gets used on trips 3-5 times a week, about every week. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. ;)

When I first bought an iPad, I tried it on my knee/lap, and found it difficult to be looking up/down all the time. Throw in some turbulence, and it wasn't any fun at all.

So, I tried a side window suction mount. That blocked so much of my vision, and was so close to me that my middle-aged eyes had trouble changing my focal distance from outside to inside viewing.

Then I bought a yoke mount (this was in a Cherokee Pathfinder), and the big iPad blocked the bottom of the Sacred Six instruments and the tach. Bad.

Finally, the Apple OS drove me to distraction...so I bought a Nexus 7. It fit on the yoke perfectly, and blocked no instruments. I sold the iPad on EBay, and never looked back.

As for Garmin Pilot on Android, yes, it's a generation or two behind the Apple version, but they started a year or two later, and have made great strides in catching up.

It's sort of like comparing the 2010 Corvette to the 2014 model. Yes, the '14 model is cooler, but both cars are still light years beyond anything that came before them.

BTW: Our GRT Avionics EFIS offers a feature that is available only to Android users. It Bluetooths to the tablet and perfectly reproduces the flight instruments, giving you a second flat panel screen in your aircraft.

This is an amazing feature. Not only does it give us full flight instrumentation in the back seat of our RV-8A, it gives us affordable redundancy in case the big screen goes up in smoke.

And it's not available for iPad.

I use Avare (free app) on a nexus 7. Can't beat it. Ifr charts, afd, weather and more. They are updating with new stuff all the time and all is free. Can't get it on apple.
