SW-Ohio/MI/IN/Everyone Gathering

Question on time - is it 12 noon Central or 12 noon Eastern? Have seen both; what were the reservations made for? We think we're in, want to make sure we reserve the plane for the right time slots.

1800 Z, I am just getting ready to call. How many?

Kacy J's has been warned.

I'm actually going to see if a CFI is willing to go up with me in the morning in the 15G25. I think if it is 20G32 (which it might be), not even a CFI will go with me =)

I will.

Saturday Wx: Breezy= marked by strong wind or more wind than usual <a breezy day is best for flying a kite>

Sunday Wx: Blustery= marked by strong wind or more wind than usual <it can be a bit risky to drive across the bridge on a blustery day>

Okay, no videos or grading of our landings tomorrow! At least winds will be close to runway 32 and no big hills or buildings upwind. :)

On my way to a 99s meeting in Indy. You all have FUN and be careful. Try to catch you next time. :D

So what do you all think?

Still kind of windy, and airmet Tango in effect until 18:00 z for the surface to 10,000 ft over much of the area, including KMIE.

Certainly there will be more fun days to fly.

It is far windier than I have ever flown, and there seems to be some precip and lower ceilings on the way back. This low time pilot is bowing out!

Still howling gusts to 30kt here, and KVLL has gone IFR due to a locally heavy snow shower. Many local METARs are showing clear skies, though winds are still a bit high. I'm still at home pondering the situation...

I've been suckered by a 3SM and BKN025 forecast coming off the lake before. And with tops to FL180, it's not like I'm going above it.

The winds are forecast to decrease:

I think it looks okay coming from Chicago and Wisconsin. Michigan, especially western Michigan, is more problematic. Obviously, it depends on pilot comfort, equipment, etc. Always make a safe choice.

I'm okay pushing to another day when more can make it, though. These winter fly-ins are always problematic. Leslie can probably still get some instrument training in today.

I'm out, so that means the actual weather will be SKC. If I launch it will be OVC010.

Enjoy the clear skies!

Yeah my problem is coming from Northeast Ohio I'll be hitting some of that Western Michigan weather you're talking about =)

I can wait a bit to make a decision. My biggest concern is the gusting direct crosswind at my home airport. If that dies down, as predicted, I have a chance.

I'll fly in most conditions, but ice and TSRA are two I don't deal with. If it was 40 degrees warmer I'd be there.

Winds and ice are my two big concerns for this trip. There is some low scud around KVLL too, as well as 30 kt winds. I'm leaving for the airport in 5 minutes, but that's just to keep the go option open if things improve. At the moment, it looks like a no go.

See you all in a little while. Its not so bad, could be a little bumpy, but not everyday is perfect.

I'm just not seeing the KVLL scud from home - 5 mi away.
Leaving for 57D airport in 5 min.

We're back home. Had a great time, and we had great attendance! Had Kent in sight up to Grissom. Easily VFR for the entire trip.

Glad I got meet up with some of you. Sorry I didn't get to talk with all of you because of our seating arrangement, but was a great day to fly.

Safe at home after a great day!
Good to see / meet everyone - excellent turnout with representatives from 6 states and 5 aircraft makes.
IN, OH, KY, IL, WI, and MI (x2)
Beech, Cessna (Cardinal x2), Mooney, Piper, and Vans (x2)

Thanks for the idea, Ted!

Made it back to Portsmouth, Ohio in 0.8 hr. We just made it back to Grayson, Ky...1.0 hr drive home. Much smoother at 5,500'. Flew over MGY as 32V taxied off Rwy 20. It was very nice meeting all of you and look forward to the next get together.

Wayne, I kept looking up to see you pass me as I heard you ask for 5500. Great to meet and talk to all of you. Great people inside and beautiful airplanes outside. I will post some pictures later.

Congrats on a nice event. Sorry to miss it but the skiing is pretty good at Steamboat right now so that's some consolation for missing this event. ;)

I will stay tuned for the possibility of another get together in the future after I return to OH in April.

Cheers

Back on the ground, getting ready to drive home from the airport (actually, from a restaurant near the airport). The flight back was uneventful, I cruised at 7500 until within a few miles of the OH-MI border, then ducked down under the deck through the last hole I was sure was big enough. I didn't go directly home though, stopped at 57D for fuel... and had a small misadventure: my left fuel cap got stuck on the chain and I not only couldn't get it unstuck, I even concluded that it was something more serious. Luckily a mechanic was available on the field and saved the day. Man was it cold out there!!!

It was great to meet all of you! Hope to do this again soon...

LOL. And you were worried about the lack of on-field assistance at Ray! The friendliest little airport in Michigan offers full service to those who know enough to ask! ;)

Seriously, glad you made it out. And back. Hope you haven't scratched Ray entirely off your list for home base.

Ok so the next time we meet up I feel we should yield a bit to the north for some of our MI friends that made the trip south. Looks like a wonderful restaurant can be found at 38D, but someone else can head the next one up when it is a bit warmer. Heard lots of talk about the Gastons get together and the Wings meet up so I am sure there will be chances for more gatherings. Here are some pictures of today's event and I know others have more pictures to share.

I approve these photos. ;)
Grant - you're such a ham!

Well, our groundspeed was in the high 220's for most of the trip down at 11,500 and in the mid-140's at 4500 and under on the way home... What a nice day to fly, though! Beautifully smooth, though. And after takeoff, we initially caught up to Grant and Leslie, then I leaned back to Super-Mooney-Efficient and we stayed pretty well even for a while until they disappeared off to the left.

It was great to see Grant, Leslie, and Liz (JoeSelch) again, and meet everyone else for the first time in person! Hopefully next time Kacy J's will have buns and root beer.
