he motioned me out of the scanner and asked me to wait for word from someone in some secret room somewhere, someone looking at a vision of my body sans jeans, cardigan, turtleneck, etc. Hmmm . . .

Then she said she needed to check something. And she began sweeping her hands around my left breast and rib cage.

This didn't bother me all that much; in fact it made me smile. For one thing, I don't really have any feeling in my left breast. That's because it doesn't exactly exist. For six years now, it's been a composition of part of my lat dorsi (mid-back muscle) and a skin graft from my back, supplemented by a sac of silicone. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the result of a mastectomy and reconstruction, which in turn is the result of breast cancer.


Back to the TSA. As the security screening woman felt me up, I mentioned to her that I have an implant, the result of mastectomy. She relayed the information to those unseen through her microphone.

A few seconds later, she sent me on my way.

I guess we are going to get back to people having to be felt up to get on an airplane!

If these scanners cannot tell the difference between a breast implant and explosives, exactly why are we buying them?

To be fair, a determination of "this thing is not like the other" is noteworthy. The purpose of these screening machines isn't to give the answer, so much as to sift through the passengers and pick out the ones who need further scrutiny.

True enough, but sadly, we don't have the machine yet which can divine the presence of malice and evil in passengers' minds, and absent such determination, the whole exercise is wasted motion.

How many liberties will we sacrifice in the supposed name of safety? So the thousands (probably more like hundreds of thousands) of people who've had fake body parts installed for whatever medical reasons are now supposed to be subjected to poking and prodding by a TSA agent every time they wish to fly? Let's just ban all commercial flight since we're so afraid of something going wrong.

The terrorists have won. This is a tremendous waste of time, money, and effort. And yes, I know this can happen to me because I've known multiple people who've been killed by terrorist attacks (all involving airplanes).

TATP is really unstable stuff. But it's a crystalline substance. I don't know what you could possibly dissolve it into that would keep its explosive properties and allow delivery via syringe.
