NEW Flyin for POAers (Windwood WV)

I have planned another flyin. After Gastons lots of folks were commenting on Gastons discussing the distance, Cost, Customer Service etc. Putting the "business issues" of Gastons aside for a moment I think everyone agrees that it is a great event and the atmosphere is terrific. While each flyin with a large POA attendance ( Gastons, Wings FLYBQ, 6Y9er) is unique the one common thread is that we go because it gives us a great opportunity to spend time with friends, fly airplanes and talk aviation, unlike sun-n-fun and Osh which are tremendous ( so I hear) its really the camraderie that makes the "POA" flyins so great. So on that note I have tried to plan another flyin that give us the Gaston's feel with on field lodging in a beautiful setting but at some what more affordable prices.

Here is the information:

Location: Windwood Flyin Resort (WV62) in Davis West Virgina in the Caannan Valley.

Dates: Arrivals- Friday Oct 2

Departures-Sunday Oct 4
(Feel free to come earlier or later if you wish)

Rates: $55.00 per night double occupancy + tax should bring us to around $60 per night per room NOT per person. ( NOTE: Normal rate is $67 w/tax but I arranged $5.00 off pe rnight for POA, Hey for two nights that 2.5 gal of 100LL). you can put a cot for a third in the room and I think thats about $10 extra per night.

Bunk Room: As I posted previously they have bunk rooms that hold 20 each they want 15 folks to reserve it. If we get overflow it may work especially for those who only want a soft spot to put their head at night. That rate is $20 per night. If we get the interest we will deal with it then.

Policy: They require a 50% deposit upon reservation, 100% refundable if you cancel with in 7 days of the reservation.

Reservations: The resort is not big it only has 17 motel/ lodge rooms no where near the size of Gastons but ces't la vie.
(As of today POAers have book 11 of the 17 Rooms)

All the rooms reserved have two double beds they do have three rooms with a King Size bed in each, if you want that you must tell them you want a king size or your gonna get a double.

**When you call them tell them you are with Pilots of America and make your reservation. I spoke with Cheryl.

I am telling everyone in advance this place does not appear to be as " sophisticated" as Gastons. I could be proven wrong. They have been very friendly and seem egar to have us. The ower of the place called me and even offered to give us a mountain flying course with FAA credit. It will probably be an hour or so Saturday AM. Please also remember this is a Test Run if we like it we can keep it in the fall move it. If we hate it well then we got to fly and be with some friends.

Note: If you are going single like me and want to share a room find someone to share with and the cost will be pretty low.

Fuel: None on field but very cheap fuel is only about 14 nm east

Food: In expensive restaurant on field serving three meals a day. Ask them to send you a packet and it will include a menu. We can also grill out as well if we like. ( the website now has a menu posted)

Reminder to those that are comming to bring your own chocks and tiedown ropes as well. There is a cable the runs on the parking area to tie down to. Given the number of planes comming,... 10+,... we will need to park tight on the ramp area.

If using GPS, you will have to enter the Airport into your GPS database with Lat/Long coordinates. There is information on Airnav for WV62 as well, but doen't list the frequencies. They are:

This is a really nice area to visit. I hiked all around these mountains with my family years ago. The lodge was pretty run down the last time I saw it. A "new" owner was just starting to renovate the place. Haven't been back in quite some time.

So, who is taking charge of the weather? I would hate to not be able to go and lose my deposit?

Rob I spoke to the folks at Windwood and I don't think we will really have to worry about " parking tight" They have the paved area with cables and should be ablet to accomodate us. Folks should bring their own ropes there apparently is also an area to park on the grass as well so if folks have a tie down kit they can bring it.

And yes it is a 3000' paved strip and the frequencies are on the resort website.

Bryon I belive it is the new owner. As you can see from the web page it looks as though they have done a decent job with the place. Also FYI as for Wx it will be CAVU the entire weekend.

Several of the folks going especially from Eastern PA will drive in if the Wx is not favorable to flying.

Yes Troy we started this a little while ago with some chat and pms. My reason for not posting it was that 6Y9er was this weekend and I don't want to compete or take the thunder of another POA flyin So I waited to post until 6Y9er was done.

Yes Shane they said we can use the grill and picnic tables next to the lodge/motel. I'll talk to Joe Beam who owns the place tomorrow to find out how big the grill is. ie whether its a group size grill or one or more of the small ones.

As it is now, I have a friend coming to visit from out of town that weekend, and we're gonna go flying to check out the fall colors and the cranberry harvest. If she doesn't make it for some reason, maybe I can go, and 1C5 only adds 18nm to the trip for me.

Trust me Kent I wasn't trying to be secretive at all. I was really torn I wanted to put it out there but I did not think it right to compete with 6Y9er. There is so much that goes into a flyin like 6Y9er ( beleive me I know) that I didn't want to divert attention from Brad Diz and Eds efforts especially since Windwood is potentially a NEW flyin for POA I was fearful that it would do that. If it takes and we pick a relativly permanent time of year then in years to come it won't be an issue. Look I first thought of Windwood as an alternate for Gastons for those from the east and ohio valley that could not afford to get to Gastons. So I have no idea how this thing will take hold but I just really dislike the idea of taking from another POA Flyin although I understand that Gastons is not supposed to be a "POA Flyin" I think you get my drift. Hope fully you can make it if not we will see you in Blue Bell in May.
