This computer is a DellInsp8200 with a plug-in wireless card - it connected fine last time it was up (months ago)
Now I get these error messages:

arrrgggghhhh!

First problem - could not eject the USB flash drive. Instructions say reboot. OK, reboot. Second problem - Unfortunately the system is stuck on shutdown - Apple's version of the Blue Screen of Death. Blue screen with the silly rotating timer icon. And stuck and stuck. And no battery to remove to force the shutdown. (Intel MacBook Pro)

Never in more than 25 years of the Mac have I ever had this problem. Fortunately, a backup Mac (OSX 10.4) and a WinXP system so I'm not hosed. But I need suggestions. Right now my only option is to trot down to the Apple store and have them deal with it unless someone around here has suggestions.

I have a client who could not reach me last night....because she could not see the phone to dial the number. It was truly heartbreaking. I would like to help her.
I did a quick google, 'phone for the blind' but didn't find what I think she needs.
At first I thought, well she could just use the speed dial on an ordinary phone.....but she can't see well enough to find the right combination of buttons.
Then I figured get one with huge buttons, but the problem is she cannot see a number that is written down- so unless she memorizes a bunch of phone numbers that won't help her either.
How about a talking phone? She could say, "Call John" and it would call a pre-programmed number.

Ideas welcomed.
Is there not a state-service that will connect a visually impaired person with anyone they want?

I bought a new computer which came with Windows 7. For some reason MS dumped Outlook Express. I really don't like Outlook for an email application.

What is a good replacment for Outlook Express that will work with Windows 7?

Ref: emailing to several folks at once.

One fam member is p'd that we all email as a group.....but do not Bcc everyone.
This f.m. feels we should never send emails without removing all traces of addresses and other IDs.

Here are my counter arguments

1. it is just a whole lot easier to punch through email to a, b, c, d, without the rigamarole of selecting Bcc for each one.
2. I like to see who the email is sent to! In case someone is left out, in case the topic needs to be discussed with one of the recipients, lots of other reasons.
3. I have had no problems, and can recall hearing of no problems with this. I am sure *someone* has had problems but it is not high on the scale of 'needs worrying about'.
4. If I receive a bcc: email, you are probably not going to get a reply from me. It seems like such an email is impersonal, and you probably don't want a reply from the 100 people you sent it to.
5. We all should have adequate antispam protection to counter any problems it might cause anyway.

Your thoughts?

Help! My son's computer has started getting bombarded by an attack that slows it down to a crawl when it's connected to the internet, either by wireless or ethernet. When we disable the wireless card or unplug the LAN, it's fine. Attached is the warning Norton gives me. I'll get this every minute or two.

How can I fix this?

My dad tried a mac. He has a weird issue where everytime it hibernates, it disconnects from the wifi network and won't reconnect until he reboots the router. It even gives him a message saying "please restart your access point and try again" or something.

None of his windows machines do this, nor linux. He's about to give up and return it.

Ideas?

I've moved all my business and Web design stuff to a laptop that has an extra hard drive bay, and I'm ready to install a second hard drive to use as a clone of the primary drive so I can get up and running quickly if I have a HD failure while on the road.

Any suggestions? I'm looking for something in the 340 - 500GB range, and I want reliability first and foremost. I don't care about the cost in this case.

Years ago, I would have just bought Seagate's top-of-the-line model, but recent history with Seagate has tarnished their reputation a bit in my view...

I have a virus. The noticable effect is slow operation of the laptop, and when operating certain programs (like Firefox) there is an audible message. "You have a problem. You have an opportunity" and then a little later, "go ahead and click on it. I dare you!" These are approximate transcriptions of the voice output.

I don't know how long I have had this virus. My normal mode on this computer is with the sound switched off. But it has been slow for a while.

The laptop is a Dell PC clone. I'm running XP Pro and Firefox 3.6.8. I have AVG Free 9.0.851 with an up-to-date database, and it finds nothing.

Hints on chasing this one down will be appreciated!

I've had the CAVU EFB-91 program for Palm for quite a few years on my Palm IIIc handheld. And that's the problem of the moment. The IIIc is no longer supported. Luckily, mine still works but I can't HotSync it because I think some of the program's gizzards got lost during one or more sick bay visits of my PC. HOWEVER, I also have the later Palm TX which is still supported and I can HotSync that one. What I'd like to do is transfer the EFB-91 program to my TX but I'm up against a brick wall in that a search doesn't show any evidence of the original EFB-91 download in my system.

If any PoA has the program to "share," that would be great. I talked with CAVU today and the guy even told me when I bought it; but it's not in their offerings anymore except for the EFB PRO(at several hundred dollars). HELP!

As a few of you might know, I have a few blogs. One is mostly photography/travel stories and the other relates to my attempts to learn how to cook (learn how to plan meals, is more like it...).

At any rate, I have both of those as well as my actual photography website (yes, a third one...) linked to google analytics.

What exactly is "bounce rate"? I get that 100% is not great, and the lower the percentage the better because you are getting more repeat traffic... but overall, what is it?

Some of my cash amount cells are blue and underlined....just like an email address. Like this $ 2.58


What am I doing to do that. I want it to go away!
