Rapaflo

My physician suggests I take Rapaflo. I once tried Flomax ( one pill) and did not like the side effects. I already tried one Rapaflo and there are no side effects.

What is the best way to start this without an FAA problem ?
Thank you !!!!

1. check the AOPA medication website. It'll have the info on documentation and such.
2. contact an AME for an opinion

...or wait for Bruce to show up here. However, after reviewing the AOPA list for Rapaflo, I don't see any way to start it without an "FAA problem." You probably want to discuss alternatives with both your urologist and a doctor familiar with FAA medical standards (like Bruce). Either way, I'd urge you not to take another pill of it until you sort this out, or at least not to fly for more than five times the dosage interval since the last time you took it.

Looking at the Website: http://www.leftseat.com/medcat1.htm
I see Rapiflo is OK,,,, with a 30 day wait ( wait and see, I guess, for side effects) , I think Rapiflo is a newer drug so they have less info on it and unfortunately, AOPA did not even update to show it yet ( as well as Flomax and others) .
So, I think I am OK ?????

Please check www.leftseat.com/medcat1.htm and look under Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)

I just called the FAA and they do not have it yet on their list,,,, I guess Pilot Medical Solutions has the wrong info. The very helpful specialist at the FAA said to check back every few months for updates,, :(( for now
Don't give up until you hear from Bruce. He may know things others outside the FAA (and even some inside it) don't.

Poked.
Well, Tamsulosin is approved, but Silodosin is not (Many many pay grades above me). Can you try a half a dose of flomax, or ask him for Dutaseride, another one that is approved?

Thank you Dr Bruce ! The MD suggested I start with Uroxatral : alfuzosin first as an alternative. I had a reaction to Flomax a while ago,,,( one pill and I knew) ... He is willing to go down the list one by one to see which works with no side effects,,, otherwise, the laser treatment is an alternative... I will suggest Avodart next I guess, unless this one seems OK..

It's great getting older ... but no complaints :))

Dr. Bruce....I was wondering if you thought a half dose could still do some good?? How would you use Flomax capsule...just cut it in half and pour it in water? Have you found one of the approved drugs to have the least side effects? Thank you so much !!

Have any of them had least side effects? Are half doses half effective ??

Dutaseride is the most common one, so I suppose that one is tolerated best.....

Interesting,, I took 1/2 pill of the Uroxatral and no side effects at all ... now I will see if it still works after a couple of days like this,,,, this would be good !!!

Ok an update, for others with a similar problem,,, I found that Uroxatral was not effective enough and gave me a stuffed nose. At first Cordura was bad with side effects, but very effective, so I went back to that, taking only a quarter of the 4mg tablet. It is OK to do that with this one as it is not time released. So far this is pretty good. I will eventually try to go to 2 mg once I get more used to the pill.

Sorry I meant Cardura.

Re: Flomax

Dr. Bruce, since my last medical, I was prescribed flomax for BPH, and have no other problems and no side effects. Do I need to do anything except list the medication on my next medical application, or should I stop taking it so I dont have any problems with the FAA.

Silodosin is approvable with a letter from your doc saying you have not reported side effects. :)

Are you saying that Flomax is not approved, are that Rapaflo is better.

laflyboy, I don't give medical advice. Each person is different, that's why you have a doctor. I just give CERTIFICATION advice.

Silodosin is not an automatic approve, flomax is, but you can get silodosin approved with a current status letter.
