What are the Necessary IFR Navaid Instruments in 2020???

That seems like a number almost related to the number of certificated fields with scheduled service (from memory it's in the mid-500s, though of dominated by some 30-40 principal airports of course, which do also have ILS). Here is the actual status of runways with LPV (the lowest minima...

    Complex/High Performance aircraft questions

Is there a diagram for high altitude take-offs in the POH? If there is, you'll probably see that they recommend a much higher prop speed that 2350. You can use the same diagram/table for power setting for max performance climb at the respective altitude you climbed to, as opposed to took off...

What are currently the best EFBs for Android?

Guess that's why YMMV. Do use a ventilated mount, but after 3000 hours with iPad/FF, seems good enough. Don't look at the screen constantly and admit that with darkest glasses it might be a tiny bit dimmer than ideal, but works well enough. Years ago used to give customer support feedback and...

What are currently the best EFBs for Android?

The overall Apple experience is so good, it invites captor-captive syndrome. Why anyone would not be in their ecosystem, have no idea. Seamless across iPad, iPhone, and Mac. Everything just works. I guess if you are "gamer" (other than Xplane12) you might need some Windows/Android solution, but...

How big of a hit is my wallet about to take?

I’d tee in an external gage and see what it reads (on the ground) as a start.

IFR out of airports with no IAP

I think you are absolutely right, but pretty sure I've gotten it on the initial clearance sometimes. Certainly had it yesterday when picked up a pre-filed IFR flight in the air.

How big of a hit is my wallet about to take?

Before you replaced the accessory case and oil pump, what was the oil pressure in the engine (the one that was hard to keep primed, but presumably you ran it at least once). Those appear to be some fairly low oil pressure readings. FWIW I have run Phillips X/C 20W-50 in a C-85 (very similar to...

IFR out of airports with no IAP

It is not uncommon to get a clearance that ask "can you maintain your own obstacle and terrain clearance to xxxx feet?" I assume but don't know the altitude is their MVA in the sector where the strip without approaches is located. How you do it is up to you - if it's socked in to the ground...

GPS Direct to fix, homing vs track

Short answer, given longer already, is no. You are to TRK directly to the waypoint. The HDG you need to stay on that track is for you to figure out. An HSI makes it much easier. So you need to rejoin the original line; sounds like you were about a mile left or right of course. If the...

Flight Plan Filed -- Told to Expect Different Route

Fly IFR a bunch more. Even when it's clear. Occasionally it'll take you a bit longer, but you'll learn the system. Often in NorCal, SoCal, and NE, you'll get some convoluted updated route back from ATC. Great, plug that in and start flying. Often they'll trim much of it off, saving you time...

    FIRSTHAND experience with Franklins

A good -360 with a balanced prop is a very smooth set up. Also -320s.

    McCauley prop corrosion

From Appendix D Part 43 for a 100 hour inspection (or annual). Propellor or aircraft manufacturer may have additional IFCA. Or an AD might require additional steps as well. (h) Each person performing an annual or 100-hour inspection shall inspect (where applicable) the following components of...

    IFR departure KSMO

Have done SMO to Bay Area (usually PAO) about 50 times. Don’t know if you had any specific questions. IFR is IFR - hand holding all the way. Leaving Bay Area it’s often easier to leave VFR and pick up clearance downstream, often with Oakland on I think 124.52 south of SJC.

A new panel with only GPS navigation for IFR flying

While flying last week a pilot asked for an ASR. Controller informed them no one trained on the procedure at that time. So unable even though listed.

    McCauley prop corrosion

Going back to OP, a decent set of eyes could see that it was corrosion. Based on the amount seen in the pics, the dimensional analysis could still of been perfect - i.e. a pin gage in the mount hole(s) would still be good. However, since there is corrosion, it would take IMHO the repair station...
